The boredom of being forced into inadvertant isolation.
"What did you say?"
I asked myself.
I do that a lot these days,
You know. I am my company.
The shows I watch, my life.
The character's stories,
I imagine, are my own.
When laughter bubbles,
Or tears flood....
It's an echo that answers.
"Do you have friends?"
I ask aloud.
Alone, I sit and ponder.
I look through my
Address book, and pick
A few to call. Every time,
I am answered
By a machine or voice-mail.
I shrug and say,
"I'll leave a message
They'll call back."
Then, I wait, and watch,
And wonder.
I exist,
The days blurring together.
"I should have known,"
I reprimand myself.
"No one calls you,"
I respond with a sigh.
"Do I have friends?"
Alone, I sit holding the phone
With one last thing to do....
