Prologue

Kayen could hear his screams. She sat in her blank room. The metal walls held the sounds of torture, but most of them were used to it. They were the other kids that were being tested on, just like Kayen.

She rubbed her wrists. Hearing the boy’s screams made her think of her own pain. They leather straps that pinned her down. The shock waves coursing through her.

Earlier, when she, Jace, and a few of the other kids had sat in the cafeteria, Jace had made a joke and all the kids had laughed. One of the many guards had walked up. “Number 14, it’s your turn.” He had stated sounded monotone just like he had been trained to. Number 14 was Jace’s number. Jace’s smile faded and the color left his face. Everyone at the table had become silent and looked at their food. Jace had stood and followed the guard knowing what awaited him.

After lunch is what the guards called ‘room time.’ It was supposed to be like a nap time. But Kayen couldn’t sleep. She never could, not with the screaming.

Kayen lay on the folding bed and curled her legs up y her chest, knowing she was next. She was number 23. Numbers 15-22 where some of the kids that couldn’t handle the shock, or the stress, or something had gone wrong, and they had been disposed of.

A knock came on her door a few minutes later. Kayen rose to open it somewhat thankful for the small amount of privacy they gave her.

Her guard led her down a bare metal hallway, which looked like the inside of the rooms but with out the beds. They walked past a series of rooms whose walls had windows to look into. Kayen glanced in one of the rooms to see them removing Jace from a wooden bed.

He had the typical shock gear on. White sweat pants for the boys and for the girls a white sweatshirt was added. Wires led up to little suction cups that were placed on his shoulder blades. He was limp but still awake. You could see his eyes, wide and aware. He was breathing heavily and out of the corner came the ‘Blue men’.

The ‘Blue men’ were just workers, like the guards that did the dirty work for the ‘head honchos’. They got the name the ‘blue men’ from the kids because they were dressed in bright blue protective suits that covered their whole body showing no skin. After all they were working with toxic things.

As the Blue Men moved in Kayen lost sight of Jace. She looked forward again, it didn’t matter anyways. They had reached the prep room. Her guard opened the door, let her in, and shut the door behind her. Kayen knew that he was waiting at the door and would come in if it took her too long.

She turned to a long slender table and looked through the numbers on it. White clothes were neatly folded each with a number next to it. 3, 4, 7, 10, and 14 didn’t have clothes by them anymore. Those kids had already been here. 23 came after 14 so she grabbed the white clothes by her number and quickly changed into them.

She exited the room and handed her guards her normal hospital gown which she wore on a regular basis with the black sweat pants she had been provided. Then she was ushered into another room. A single wooden chair sat in the middle of the room. It was screwed into the floor so it wouldn’t move no matter what was happened in it.

Kayen was ushered over to it. She sat and was immediately strapped down. They stuck the suction cups to her palms and plugged the wires into the boxes that sat in random spots all over the room.

There were more boxes than usual; every single one of them had wires plugged into it that led to the two suction cups at her hands.

The blue men left the room quickly and the electricity started to flow. At first Kayen could stand the pain, but as the intensity started to grow and more boxes were put to use, she started to squirm.

She tried to pull her hands free but the leather straps held tight. She let out a few squeaks as she felt more boxes come to life.

All of the kids had made a pact not to scream unless they really meant it because they felt that if they screamed it gave all the workers a twisted type of joy that the kids absolutely refused to give to them.

Eventually the pain became so intense that Kayen couldn’t stand it or hold it back. She threw back her head and let out a blood-curdling scream.

Chapter 1

“Hurry Kayen! The cops that were out on the field will be here any second and we need those records.”

Kayen pressed her hands against the locked file cabinets harder. She could feel it dissolving at her hands and falling as pieces to the floor but they were think and it wasn’t dissolving fast enough.

Suddenly she felt her hands slip through the first layer of metal. Metal had three main layers, a medium thick one, a really think one and then the thickest one. Her hands fall another layer. One more to go.

“C’mon Kayen!” Talon urged again. Obviously he had gotten done destroying the office.

“Why would they be coming? The only person that was here his being dealt with.” Kayen nodded towards Seth who had just gotten finished tying up the man who was now unconscious.

Talon coughed. “I accidentally hit the alarm.” He coughed again and turned away.

Kayen’s hand slipped through the last layer of metal and she rolled her eyes and pulled all the files through. “You are so lucky.” She handed him the stack of files.” Look through these. I don’t know what we are looking for.”

Talon took the files and started ruffling through them. “We need the file they got from… Here it is.” He pulled a thin file from the stack and handed her the rest.

Kayen put the files back and started to fix the gap she had made, so it would take them longer to find out what was gone.

Sirens wailed outside and the lights were dousing the trio in red and blue. Talon looked up from the file in shock. “C’mon.” He said putting his hand on Kayen’s shoulder and trying to pull her away from the file cabinet.

“No, I have to do this!” Kayen said.

“We don’t have time!” Talon panicked.

The cops burst in the door, guns in shooting position.

“Don’t move.” Seth said keeping one hand on Talon’s mouth and the other on Kayen’s shoulder as she fixed the filing cabinet. She got finished just as the cops said the room was clear.

Seth started moving them towards the door making sure his invisibility was working. When they got far enough from the station Seth let go and collapsed laughing. That’s the most I’ve ever come in handy.” He laughed again out of breath.

Talon clutched the file to his chest looking petrified.

Kayen walked over to him and stole the file. “What is this anyways?” She asked opening it to the only paper it had in it. “Blueprints?” She asked confused.

“Not just any blue prints. Those are the blueprints to ‘the monster makers’.” Seth said getting to his feet.

“Why do we need these?” Kayen said putting the file back together and handing it to Talon.

“So we can destroy it.” Talon said.

“So they can’t get any stronger. So we can beat them to Memory.” Seth cut in.

Kayen felt stupid as she asked. “Who is Memory?”

“Not who-“Talon said but was cut off again by Seth.

“But what. Memory used to be human but they tested on her and made her a genie who will grant you three wishes.” Seth said jumping around like a faerie with a wand.

“Really?” Kayen asked shocked and still confused.

Seth stopped jumping to look at her. “No.” His voice was laden with sarcasm.

Talon took over. “We don’t know who or what Memory is, we just know she is important to them, so we are going after her too.”

Kayen sat down. “Well that’s stupid.”

Lights flashed around the corner and Talon stuffed the file in his shirt.

Two cop cars cruised by flashing their lights but not making any noise.

They pulled up beside the three teens and rolled down their windows. “Have you guys seen a group of three with a police station file go by here?” A bald cop with a goatee asked.

Seth made a mock innocent look as he said. “Nope. Us two are just sitting around.” He made a fake salute with his hands and put his hands behind his back making him look irristisably stupid.

The cop sighed and looked past him to Talon. “This one a little slow?”

Talon tried to hide his laughter as he answered. “Yes sir.”

Seth shot him a glare and looked back at the cop. The cop looked over to Kayen then started to roll up his window. “You kids take care of that slow one.” As he drove off Kayen, Talon, and Seth all broke out in laughter.

“Man I think he was the slow one. He asked if we had seen three teens any where.” He straightened up and tried to look serious. “But seriously, I only see two.” He pointed to Seth then Kayen “One… Two…” He burst out laughing again so hard that he fell to the ground.

Seth fell on top of him. So I’m the slow one?” He laughed and smacked Talon upside the head.

“Yeah.” Talon grunted and pushed his brother off.

“Guys?” Kayen was half yelling over the wind Talon had kicked up.

“What? We can use our powers them cops are too dense to realize what’s happening.” Seth laughed and turned invisible.

“No guy-“

“What?” Talons voice sounded exasperated but you couldn’t see his expression through the dust his wind was picking up.

“Run.” Kayen pointed at the cops who had barely reached the next corner but were turning around sirens blaring lights flashing wildly.

Seth and Talon looked at the cars that were now speeding towards them and turned and ran, Seth laughing manically, Talon with the biggest smile on his face.

Kayen ran to a near by tree. Hollowed it out and stepped inside. She closed up the hole she had made she had used to enter, but left a hole so she could see what was happening. Seth went invisible holding the file and leaving Talon to lead the cops away. “You guys suck!” he yelled as he noticed his comrades had left him.

Kayen head a knock on her tree, she dissolved a hole and stuck her hand out to take the file that Seth was handing her.

He cleared his throat and said. ‘I think I’m gonna go help my bro now.” He flickered into existence a dorky smile plastered across his face.

Kayen smiled and tucked the file into her jacket. Seth nodded in approval then disappeared again. Kayen silently laughed when she heard his foot steps trekking silently across the grass, somewhat hesitantly.

Kayen traveled how going from hollow tree to hollow tree, trying to keep from being found, not that she would be, the town had almost been abandoned because the nuclear power plant that had been built near the town, so she could keep Talons precious file safe. The guys were already at the apartment by the time she reached the door. She silently dissolved trough the door, and built it back up again.

“You should have saw his face when you suddenly appeared in front of the car!” Talon cracked up. Kayen snuck over and poked her fingers into his side as he hunched over laughing making him jump.

This got Seth laughing just as hard as Talon had been. Talon flushed somewhat embarrassed but then used to it at the same time. “S’not funny.” He muttered knowing it wouldn’t do any good.

Seth looked up at Kayen. “I should’ve just kept the file. Woulda made it home sooner.” His face had gone serious but his eyes still held that playful touch that was always there.

She playfully punched his shoulder. “Yeah, but I bet you would have lost it” She pulled it out of her coat as if to prove she had don’t the impossible (for Seth).

She flopped it down on the table and both boys automatically reached for it. She snatched it up before either of them could touch it.

“Tell me ‘exactly’ what it is that we need this for,” She paused for dramatic effect. “Or it goes Poof!”

Talon stood to his feet distressed by her threat. “Now let’s sit down and calmly talk this over.” He grabbed for the file again, but Kayen held it out if his reach.

“Don’t be grabby.” She said placing her finger in the edge of the file feeling it crumble away at her touch.

Now Seth stood to his feet, obviously confused by Kayen’s personality change but distressed too. “Don’t be hasty.” He muttered also reaching for the file.

Kayen knew she couldn’t keep the file away from both of them, seeing as Seth was so much taller, so she completely dissolved it letting the particles scatter as she said. “Poof.” Blowing them away like snow.

Talon fell to the floor trying to collect the falling particles with little avail. “How could you?!” he wailed. Even Seth’s eyes playful touch had turned to disbelief.

Kayen tried to look horrified. As she looked from Seth to Talon’s expecting expressions and said ‘I can’t”

Talons voice rose two octaves higher. “Why?”

“It’s not all there.” Kayen said and reached into her jacket.

Seth had a look of realization on his face as he sat down laughing to himself. But Talon wasn’t paying any attention. He was searching the floor for the missing crumbs to the file.

He glared up at her just as she pulled the missing piece our of her jacket, the only thing that had been in the scrawny file, the blueprints.

Talon stood and snatched them away from her, still glaring at her as realization spread across his face too. “I have to admit.” He said. “That was good.”

“Good?” Obviously Seth couldn’t control himself any longer. “That was great!”

Talon shot him a glare and a slight breeze stirred in the room, scattering the file particles. “Fine it was great. But that wasn’t funny either.” He stuffed the blueprints in his shirt, folded his arms across his chest glaring at the two who sat across from him trying to contain their laughter.

Kayen managed to control herself before Seth did. “So why do we need it?”

Talon still hadn’t gotten over his most recent trauma and glared at her, clutching the blueprints, so Seth calmed himself down enough to keep a straight face. “We told you. So we can destroy the Monster Maker.”

“Yeah but how will that help us?” Kayen asked.

“It will stop them from testing on more kids, and making their monsters stronger.” Seth sighed as if this was supposed to be common knowledge.

“Yeah,” Talon began not able to stay mad. “Did you know that even if a ‘monster’ hasn’t had contact with the machine for a while, if we destroy it they will still slowly lose their powers and die?”

Monsters were what Talon and Seth called people that had been tested on, and didn’t develop their powers naturally. They really disliked anyone who didn’t develop their powers naturally and Kayen knew this, which was why she had never told them about her past.

Kayen visibly stiffened her jaw clenched, neither of the boys seems to notice both so involved in their conversation.

“Then there will be no more cheap wannabes who can’t develop powers on their own.” Seth said giving Talon a high-five. He turned to Kayen to give her one but she stood and pushed her chair in.

“Maybe they didn’t have a choice.” She said and started off down the hall.

Talon shoved the table into Seth. “You know that is a touchy subject for her!”

Seth shoved it back. “She asked!” A worried look came over his face as he spoke.

Talon sighed staring after Kayen. “Well, you didn’t have to go that far.” His voice sounded bored.

“Yeah, but you added to it.” She sighed his eyes not leaving where Kayen had now disappeared.

Talon sighed again not taking his eyes from the hallway either and leaned in his elbow. “Yeah, I did but you started it.”

Seth couldn’t think of anything to say back so he just stood and said, “Oh well, maybe she was just tired and going to bed. We should too, it’s late.”

Talon stood and grabbed the blueprints and shuffled over to the safe. He placed the blueprints in on top of some cash, and other plans that had failed but Seth had insisted on keeping. He closed the safe and wandered back to the table. Placing his feet on the table he switched on the TV.

“Tonight on two news,” the announcer was saying. “We have a special announcement. Earlier tonight, the police station was broken into, the police are not sure if anything was stolen, and they have no leads but they said they would be sure to inform us of any updates.” She smiled sweetly “On a happier note, Union won their most recent game against Uintah. The score was 20-5 giving our…”

Talon smirked thinking of how Kayen had almost gotten then caught to fill the hole she had made. He leaned back and closed his eyes.

Chapter 2

Red then white, red, red, red, then white. The rhythmical pattern of the lights calmed Kayen even though now was not the time to be calm.

She was at the center of the 17 remaining test kids. They were gathered around the boundary wall waiting anxious while Kayen used her power. This was what the testing had done. With one hand she could destroy and with the other she could fix whatever the other hand destroyed. The wall at her hands was dissolving into crumbs.

“Hurry up, Kayen!” Jace urged from the other side of the wall. With his power, flying, he had cleared the fence easily and could have already been gone but he wasn’t going to leave Kayen. She knew that his staying was putting him in danger so she silently urged her self to work faster.

The white spot light found the huddled group and dogs barked far off but getting closer. The cries of the kids became more desperate. Three huge rottwilers appeared as the last of the wall fell away. “Run!” Kayen yelled as the kids began to push though the hole in the fence. Kayen being the youngest was swept up in the flow.

Every where she turned kids were pushing and shoving in desperate attempts to get farther away. The dogs had followed them though the wall and caught up to the last of the kids.

Screams rang out as they buried their teeth into the legs of those not fast enough, which would soon be Kayen.

“Kayen!” A voice, though only heard faintly over the cries and moans of kids. “Take my hand.’ Jace hovered above her holding out his hand. Kayen took it with out a moment of hesitation.

Jace pulled her out of the crowd which was now surrounded by dogs and masked men with guns.

As Jace and Kayen flew away Kayen counted the heads of those that had been herded into a circle.

One, Two, Three, Four, Man, how she wished they would stop moving, counting was hard enough as it was. Five, Six, Seven, Wait what comes after Seven, oh, octopus, eight. Eight, Nine, Ten, plus, One. I’ll ask Jace how many that is later. She thought as the lab and her ‘home’ got father away.

Kayen sat up in a cold sweat. She was in her bed but breathing hard. Her mouth was dry. She ran a hand through her hair and slipped her feet out of bed. She knew what had brought that memory back. Today, when they were robbing the police station, she hadn’t remembered it then but now it haunted her.

She walked into the kitchen and got a drink of water. She turned around, and jumped when she noticed Talon, leaned back in a chair, with his feet on the table. He looked worn out other than the smile that was plastered on his face. She would get after him later for having his feet on the table.

She walked over to him and almost that ran into the wall of wind that was keeping him suspended as he slept. She ran a hand through his shaggy dark hair. Even though he and his brother were twins they looked nothing alike, Seth had blonde hair and brown eyes while Talon had the dark hair and blue eyes. Both had strong jaw lines, and perfect features.

She turned back to and turned off the TV. Then walked back to her room, and laid back down. Talons face had made her day and she fell asleep with a mimic of his smile on her face.

Chapter 3

“Get up!” Kayen said hitting the back of the chair.

Thud!

Talon lay there on the floor, sprawled out, his chair on the ground underneath him, “Ow…” He moaned as Kayen placed a steaming cup of coffee on the table.

Seth came out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist. “What happened? I heard a thud.”

Kayen turned away disgusted. She picked up a pillow off the couch and chucked it behind her. “Get some clothes on!”

Seth chucked and tossed the pillow back at her. “I’m going, I’m going.”

Talon coughed and pulled himself off the floor. He set the chair up, sat down, grabbed the coffee, and placed his feet on the table.

Kayen walked by pushing his feet off the table, and throwing him off balance, and sending him to the floor again. “Feet off the table.” She instructed

He stood to glare at her, coffee dripping off his now soaked hair.

Seth came back out, in jeans, but with out a shirt, rubbing the towel over his head. He laughed and handed the towel to his brother. “Looks like you need this more than I do.” He chuckled again as Talon took the towel and started to dry his hair still glaring at Kayen.

Kayen poured a cup of coffee for Seth and handed it to him as Talon headed back towards the bathroom.

Kayen put more coffee on to brew and called back to Talon as the shower sputtered to life. “There will be more when you get out!”

Seth laughed as he emptied a full bottle of creamer into his coffee. Kayen walked over to the couch and flipped the TV on as she walked past it. “-swear.” The officer that was in the police station last night was saying, “One kid was invisible when he attacked me. The other one was a tornado when he shredded the desk, and the girl didn’t even open the door she just walked through it. She was the one who I saw picking the lock on the filing cabinets before I got knocked out.” The man looked crazy as he gave his description of their powers.

The camera zoomed out then back in on the main announcer who said. “There you have it, an eyewitness report on the police station break-in yesterday. Police are still sorting through the wreckage to see if anything is missing, but the eyewitness is sure it is one of their files, which narrows down the search, though they question his sanity. He also gave us descriptions of the thieves.” Three sketched pictures flashed on the screen looking nothing like Talon, Kayen, or Seth.

“Thank you, Sarah.” The big head announcer said as the camera flicked back to him.

“Boo!” Seth said throwing some of his breakfast, M&M’s, at the screen.

Kayen rolled her eyes. “We need to lay low for a while, that means no more break-ins” She cast a meaningful glance at him, but he tried to look nonchalant.

“No one can see me anyways.” Seth muttered.

“That police man saw you or he wouldn’t have given that description.” Kayen said and pointed at the screen.

“It didn’t look like me at all.” Seth sighed. “It’s you and Talon that need to be worried.”

“’Bout what?” Talon asked coming out of the bathroom, fully clothed.

“See at least your brother has some decency.” Kayen said changing subject, hinting at Seth’s topless ness.

Seth just laughed and went invisible, but you could tell he was still on the couch by the indent that was there. “Better?” he asked he voice heavy with sarcasm.

“No.” Kayen teased.

Seth must have picked up a pillow because one was suddenly hovering in the air.

Kayen ducked behind Talon, using him as a shield, which protested and tried to get out of the middle of the battle.

Seth chuckled and set down the pillow then stood, his invisible form flickering. He walked over to the hallway, looking at Kayen and turning visible he said. “You got lucky.” Then he disappeared into the hall.

Kayen made a face a released Talon who immediately pulled away and went to sit on the couch. “What are we? Two?”

Kayen turned to him “Heck yes!”

Talon rolled his eyes and spread out on the couch.

Seth came out a few minutes later with a tight Aeropostale shirt on, that really accented his muscles. He walked over and sat on Talon.

Talon grunted but didn’t protest other than that. Seth squirmed around but Talon didn’t say anything even as a pained expression came over his face.

Seth stood having lost interest in torturing his non-respondent “Hey Talon, lets go to the park” He said and held a hand out to help Talon up.

Talon glared suspiciously at Seth’s hand as if it were venomous then got up on his own. “You coming?” he asked Kayen.

Kayen looked at them over the top of the book she was reading and shook her head.

“Okaaay.” Talon said as a lost invitation not wanting to be alone with his brother. Seth caught this and pulled his brother out the door.

A few minutes later they were walking down the street. They were only a few blocks from the park but every few seconds Seth would say. “Walk faster.” Or “Hurry up.”

Talon came to a complete stop. “Why are you so antsy?” He asked very paranoid.

Before Seth could respond there was a huge crash. A lot like thunder other than the tremors in the ground that followed.

The brothers looked at each other, then at the park which seemed to be the center of the earth shattering crashes. Lightning danced from the ground to the sky zapping at tiny helicopters that were hovering nearby dropping exploding objects on the source of the lightning. They looked back at each other then sprinted towards the park.

As they neared the park the electricity and heat was so intense that Talon covered his eyebrows so he would have them later on. Seth pulled him along and with in seconds they saw the source of the chaos.

The lighting, from a distance had looked wild and everywhere, but from closer Seth could see that it radiated around one spot, in the middle of the spot stood one girl.

Flaming objects were falling from the sky aimed at the girl but the lighting would hit them before they even got close enough to singe the girl’s long blonde hair which was standing on end from all the electricity.

“Seth.” Talon whispered and pointed towards the sky. The balls of fire were coming from the helicopters, which were no longer tiny, where a man engulfed in fire stood. In the other helicopter a man formed of trash was throwing mounds of garbage into the air. When the garbage and flames met they created molten objects falling all around the park.

In between the two helicopters, dressed in all blue hovered a teenager, no strings attached, conducting the garbage and flame throwing men.

“Those are ‘Monsters’!” Seth muttered. “And if she is fighting them, then she is one of us!” A huge grin flashed across his face and eh raised his hands and started waving at the girl. The girl turned to look at them, cast a glare up at the ‘monsters’, the back at Seth and Talon.

Raising her hand she made a gun with her fingers. “Bam.” She said as a both of lightning spiraled towards them.

It struck.

Talon fell to the ground screaming.

Kayen watched as the guys left then stood and walked over to the safe. She opened it with ease and pulled out its newest addition, the blueprints. She spread the three thin sheets out on the table.

Closing her eyes she traced her fingers over the lines. She could feel the charging electricity that, no mater how far in the past, would always be a part of her. She pictured the long corridors, shiny and silver, with doors everywhere and men in blue and sometimes orange walking purposely through them. The cafeteria and the group of kids that started out large and eventually shrunk. The kids that didn’t talk much, like herself, and those who talked to everyone, like Jace… Jace…

The earth under her feet rocked violently startling Kayen and bringing her out of her memories. The table fell away from her, scattering the blueprints, and Kayen fell back against the wall. She heard a sickening Smack! and everything went black…

Jace put Kayen down as soon as they were far enough away from the lab. He was exhausted and Kayen could tell just from looking at his face. They stayed near a park for the first week, stealing food and bottled water. Kayen could tell Jace didn’t like the idea of stealing for a living. “We need to go back.” He would say and Kayen would respond with a laugh as if he was joking.

One day though he picked her up and started back in the direction of the lab. He flew close to the ground too worn out to fly higher and Kayen screaming and kicking didn’t help. His grip on her slipped and she fell towards the ground about 3 feet away. “I hate you!” She yelled at him and ran off.

“You are so difficult! I hate you too!” He yelled after her.

Half of her wanted Jace to follow and all of her expected him to. But when she reached the park they had been staying near and slowed to a stop, looking around for him, he was gone, no where to be seen.

She sat in the sand, tears streaming down her face when a little blonde boy suddenly appeared beside her. “Don’t cry.” He comforted. Another boy, walked up and folded his arms, but when he saw her tears he bent near her too. “You’re not alone.” He said and a few tears brimmed in his eyes.

The blonde boy smacked his brother. “You’re not supposed to be crying, Talon.” He said.

The dark hair boy rubbed his eyes “She is going to stay by us.” He said deciding for Kayen.

Kayen simply nodded and the blonde haired boy brushed away her tears. “You won’t have a reason to cry anymore. We’ll make sure of it, and if anyone gives you a reason we’ll beat their face in!”

Kayen laughed and brushed the rest of her tears away. “And for you guys I won’t cry anymore.”

The blonde haired boy got a goofy smile on his face. “I’m Seth.” He motioned to the dark haired boy, “And that is my twin, Talon.”

Chapter 4

The pain in Talon’s leg was excruciating. It filled his whole body and he lost control of his powers. The wind picked up creating a tornado above Seth, Talon and the girl that controlled lightning.

The kid that was hovering between the helicopters took off, no strings attached, just flying. The helicopters, though, weren’t that lucky. Both were sucked into the vortex, and cast out spiraling a few seconds later as Talons tornado increased in wind velocity and power.

The girl, who was standing just outside of the circle of safety that automatically formed 10 feet around Talon, suddenly looked worried, then confused as she glanced at where Seth was huddled over his screaming brother. She took a hesitant step towards them, hesitated again, and then took a few more steps so she was inside the ten-foot circle.

Her hair fell to her sides, past her fingertips, as the wind didn’t touch her anymore. She started purposefully towards them, all hesitations gone.

Seth didn’t realize how close she got until he noticed her feet near Talon’s injured leg. She knelt and her fingers hovered over the wound. “Is he…?” She asked then at a loss for, glanced up at the violent weather screaming over head. “Doing this…?” She completed then looked back at Seth.

Seth met her startling blue eyes. “No. Tornados just randomly appear overhead whenever he gets shocked by lighting.”

The girl flinched and adverted her eyes to Talon’s leg. “I can help. May I?” Without waiting for a response she pulled out a pocket knife and cut away the jeans around the wound. She placed her hands directly on his leg and closed her eyes.

A blue light appeared under her hands and Talon began to calm down. His screaming died down first, followed by the tornado.

The girl stood and moved away from Talons leg, met Seth’s gaze and nodded. Seth slung his now unconscious brother on his back and stood. “Who are you?”

Kayen opened her eyes slowly. Every movement sending jolts a pain up her back and to her skull. The wind had picked up. Something wasn’t right. She slowly got to her hands and knees and grabbed the blueprints and some money. She filled her pockets and slowly made her way to her room. She picked up a sheet of paper and quickly scribbled a note for Talon and Seth if they came back, stuck it in the book she had been reading and dropped it by the door, knowing at least Talon would check it for clues.

She was just about to open the door when a white van coasted to a stop outside. No one got out. It just sat there.

Feet appeared at the top of the window Kayen was looking out of. Slowly the rest of the legs came into view and then the rest of the kid’s body. Kayen dropped to the floor and rolled under the bed.

The door swung open and the flying boy’s feet appeared near hers. She held her breath and he wandered through the house and came back to the front door where he stood for a minute before he was joined by two more pairs of shoes. “Find the blueprints.” He said and Kayen’s heart skipped a beat.

That voice. The flying. Jace.

“We know these two took them. They’ve been after out operation for as long as I can remember. Never succeeded but we think they’ve finally got a good plan.” Kayen couldn’t hold back a grin as the feet dispersed into the house. Talon and Seth finally had a plan that got these guys scared enough to bomb their house. But her smirk faded as Jace continued to himself. “They even convinced one of our own.” He muttered. “And they will return her.”

Kayen panicked. She scooted forward and placed her hand in the wall dissolving a hole big enough she could fit through then started crawling through it. She had to find Talon and Seth before these men did.

Footsteps told her that someone had moved into her room, so she squirmed faster. Tables were still being over turned in the kitchen proving that the other two men had not finished searching there which left only Jace to be the one searching her room.

She tried to resist the urge to look back, but eventually it won her over. She rolled the blueprints up and tucked them in her jacket before glancing over her shoulder only to be face to face with Jace.

He had knelt down and was looking at her. His eyes grew wide as they connected with her face. His mouth formed words but no sound came out. He had lost all of his boyish features that Kayen remembered and his bright blonde hair had turned into a light brown.

Kayen pulled her eyes away and pulled her upper-body though the hole. Jace unfroze and grabbed her shoe. “Wait!” He said quietly so the other men wouldn’t hear. “Let’s just calmly talk this over.”

Kayen glared at him and yanked her foot away leaving her shoe in his grasp. “There is nothing to talk about.” She said as she filled the hole in the wall.

She stood shakily not quite trusting her legs to hold her. Jace had looked so different. The wind was dying down, but it was still whipping Kayen’s hair into her face making her remember Talon and Seth. She glanced towards the park, took a deep breath and started out of the alley behind their apartment, somehow knowing that Jace wouldn’t tell the other men about their encounter.

“My name is Alea Rose.” The girl said. She had a strange accent that Seth couldn’t identify where it was from.

“Were you born with those powers?” He said.

“No.” Alea answered warily. “When I was little about 5 the car I was traveling in got struck by lightning, killing all of my family, but I got out unscathed, with the ability to control electricity.”

“Then why were you shooting lightning at them?” He motioned towards the sky where the helicopters had been.

“I don’t know,” Alea lied. “They just attacked me.” She folded her arms across her chest. “Been happening a lot lately, which I’m guessing is your fault?”

“Why would it be my fault” Seth said defensively practically yelling.

“I don’t just mean you. I mean both of you, all of you. Him and his powers, you and what ever you do!” Alea yelled back, stepping closer.

“So he controls wind what does that have to do with it being our fault?” Seth stepped back.”

“You were the ones who stole those blueprints that they came after me for” Alea stepped forward.

“I thought you didn’t know why they were coming after you.” Seth straightened up and would have folded his arms had he not had to hold on to his brother.

Talon groaned and Alea shifted her gaze from Seth’s face to Talon then past them both. “Damn it. Screw this.” She said pissed and looked around for some place to hide.

Seth turned around. Kayen was coming towards them she looked disoriented as she came down the sidewalk, every other step crooked from the loss of one shoe. She looked up at them saw Alea and froze.

Recognition flickered in Aleas eyes but it was gone as fast as it came and her face became void of emotion.

Seth grabbed Alea’s arm to prove that she was a friend and waved Kayen over. Alea struggled a little as Kayen approached but as soon as Kayen was close enough both girls stopped.

“I… remember…you.” Kayen began slowly. “That little girl that attached to…” She paused and cast a glance at Seth. “me… that one time.”

Alea nodded and opened her mouth to respond but Seth cut in. “What are you doing here anyway, Kayen. Didn’t you say that you weren’t going to come with us?

Kayen shrugged. “I didn’t have a choice. The apartment was attacked and raided.” Her eyes grew cloudy

Seth looked horrified. “But… What… The blueprints!” He threw his arms up in the air, almost dropping Talon. The movement made Talon groan and Kayen noticed him for the first time.

Her face grew stiff and her eyes connected with his face, “What happened to him?” Though her eyes which were now on Alea told that she already knew.

Seth coughed. “She didn’t mean it. She was fighting against monsters and thought we were trying to come up behind and ambush her. Though I don’t know what kind of assassins wave…” He trailed off.

Kayen didn’t even blink but her eyes fell from Alea’s face. “They were here too? That means they really want these.” She pulled the blueprints out of her jacket but turned away so Alea would really have to struggle to get them from her. She looked up at Seth as he took the blueprints not quite as protective of them as Talon would have been. “If they were her… Where did they go?”

Seth sighed. “When Talon got hurt his powers switched in to natural defences and made a tornado which took out the helicopters. One of the monsters flew away though.” He paused and pulled Kayen against him and grabbed Alea’s wrist, making them all invisible, just as two white vans drove by.

Alea glared at him and pulled away becoming visible again. “What do you think you are doing?”

The vans stopped and pulled in to the park and about 20 men piled out dressed in orange or blue rubber suits. Alea glanced around the three had disappeared. Great she thought as her hair started to stand up as she built up the electricity in the air. Suddenly she felt a hand on her wrist and the other three came in view. “Is that you…” She stuttered to Seth. “Or her?”

“Definitely me.” Seth nodded then Kayen motioned for them to stop talking so loudly. She was clinging to Seth’s shirt as he held Talon with one hand and Alea with the other. It was uncomfortable to be this close to him because she could feel his muscles under the shirt and hated to be physically aware of him this way.

“We need a distraction.” She whispered half to herself. “I’ll go. You take Talon to the bank. I’ll meet you there.” With that she pulled away from him exposing herself and ran.

Jace slammed his fist into the floor. He slid under the bed and pushed on the wall as if it was just a hallucination. But he knew better, when Kayen rebuilt something it was a good as new… or better. He crawled back out to find himself staring at two pairs of rubber blue boots.

“Sir?” one man, David, asked and squatted down to look under the bed. “The blueprints were gone, we couldn’t find them anywhere.”

The girl next to him smirked then her smile faded. “You saw her.” She said as she read his mind. “You know, she chose to leave, she didn’t want to come back and do what was best for her.” She knelt down and brushed some brown hair out of his eyes.

Jace pulled away. “No Jessica.” He hit the ground again. “I chose to leave her. I could have made her come but I left and those kids found her. She was young and didn’t know any better.” He stood.

Jessica pulled back, “Well it’s up to you do decide whether the mission and people that care about you matter more or whether one girl that doesn’t even care about you matters more.”

Jace leaned back on his heels. Seeing Kayen had been half a relief and half agrivating. She had just left and her face didn’t even show surprise at seeing him. He glowered up at Jessica who smirked and read his thoughts again. “Alright to the park we go!” She said and grabbed Jace’s arm as they walked towards the vans not caring that he was deep in thought and didn’t even notice her.

David looked back. “Time to destroy the evidence.” He said and the apartment building exploded.

Jessica told Rebecca, the girl in the drivers’ seat of his van, where to go, and they were off.

Jace’s face brightened suddenly. “If we take one of those guys that Kayen has become so attached to we can get her to come back willingly, well sort of.”

Jessica looked at him. “Yeah, like those guys aren’t going to put up a fight about being taken hostage.” They were driving by the park now, and though it was torn apart it was empty of life just like the rest of the town. Just then the girl that Jace and the others had fought earlier appeared and the Rebecca slammed on the brakes and whirled into the park, giving everyone in the van whiplash. The van behind them followed the same course.

The girl looked around as if she was looking for someone then her gaze locked on the vans as everyone poured out and her hair started to stand on end as she collected electricity and men started to file out of the vans. Then she disappeared again and Kayen appeared and ran off in the opposite direction. “Follow her!” he ordered and half of the men began chase. “Ellie! Find where they are. We need one of those guys and I know one of them is injured.”

A girl with frightening black eyes stepped forward. “I’d love to.” She muttered and then giggled. “He thinks he can hide.” She took one step towards him and in less than a second she was at his side. She threw a punch into the blonde boys jaw and all three, both boys and the girl, became visible as the blonde boy fell backwards dropping his injured friend, who screamed as one of his legs hit the ground, and blood started to flow again turning his jeans a deep purple, and exposing the girl.

The kid sat up and rubbed his jaw, beginning to get up and going invisible but Ellie was at his side in and instant. She nailed a kick right into his stomach and he coughed up blood and crumpled to the ground. She spun into another kick, this time hitting his face and causing blood to gush from his nose. She bent over to get closer to him. “It’s a shame I have to ruin such a pretty face.” She said and giggled her high pitched bell-like laugh again.

The girl that was with them raised a hand and Ellie felt a sharp pain in her side. She ran back over by Jace and hid behind him, bracing her side, feeling the blood gush through her fingers.

The girl helped the blonde boy up and he held his nose.

Jace leaned back. “Go get the injured boy that is on the ground screaming.” He kept his voice low.

Ellie looked at him confused but didn’t question it. He had his reasons and for this mission the bosses had put him in charge. She sprinted forward quickly at was picking up the injured boy before the one she had kicked was on his feet. She cast him a grin and ran back to Jace, surprised at how light the boy on her shoulder was.

Jace took the injured boy from her as he reached her and the blonde haired boy and his girlfriend disappeared again but not before they all caught the worried look that he had on his face as he noticed they had his friend.

“Get in the van.” Jace said and turned to Bobby, “Take care of them. We don’t need them; leave them alive so they can tell Kayen we have this one.” He shrugged his shoulders as if to show the kid he had in his arms.

Bobby grinned and his small squinted eyes became smaller. “Gladly.” He stepped forward as the vans loaded again and burst into flames. He made fire balls on his hands and cast them wildly around the park until an invisible moving object caught fire. The blonde hair boy became visible, pulled his shirt off and threw it into a flaming pile before grabbing the girl’s wrist and disappearing again.
