One of the most touching women Shakespeare created.
Desdemona

Like a moonbeam she pierces
The heart of Othello of heroic deeds
The purity of a dove
The innocence of an angel above
Love and devotion her life’s aspects
Beauty and grace her fine attributes.

She loves a man of noble deeds
Othello’s darkness hardly matters.
She hesitates not to leave her sire
When in waiting he does not tire.
Marries and makes him the sole
Lord of her life, her mind and soul.

How would she know the cruel fate
The fickle gods planned of late
For her and her loving mate
So the jealous hearts are sate.
Mortals would cry for mercy
To save this lady of decency.

Who’d ever guess
That the rare happiness
Of the graceful couple
Would end in a debacle
When serpent Iago
His malice let go.

So the curtain fell
On her love none could quell
Of fair Desdemona’s life
Oh! God forbid Othello’s strife!
Too late he was
In knowing the cause.

Her last words of love undiminished
And devotion unmatched
Haunted him till with his own hand
He carved his tragic end.
I prithee fellow mortals! Do not
A wife’s faithfulness doubt

When she believes your every word
Return the favor, the least you could.

Dedicated to the angelic Desdemona, Othello’s unfortunate wife.
