A DARK THANKSGIVING

The preparations were underway, the children coming home
to celebrate another Thanksgiving Day, I would not be alone!
The shopping was done and the turkey was slowly defrosting;
I never had a second thought about how much it was costing!

My pies were all baked, the stuffing and rolls ready to prepare,
all the great cooking smells really brought a delight to the air!
I glanced out the window at the new fallen snow and thought
"this won't be too bad, they'll be here soon, likely as naught."

First came the phone call from Tammy who told me, in tears,
that she just couldn't make it, it had been "one of those years!"
The flight had been canceled because of an oncoming storm,
I'd rather she be safe so I didn't feel bad for Thanksgiving morn.

Roger called saying he and his family were unable to come,
the roads were getting bad, driving was not going to be fun.
Then Molly called with deep regrets and by then I could see,
that the only one home on Thanksgiving was going to be me.

So I lifted my chin and started preparing my feast for one,
I opened the oven door to see if the big turkey was done.
Much to my surprise, the oven was cooling down too fast;
the electricity had gone out, as it has at times in the past.

Dinner by candlelight to some might be a real good treat,
I sat down at the table, with salad, cold rolls and no meat.
My children were safe and things were not quite so bad,
you'd never know a dark Thanksgiving was about to be had.

So I counted my blessings and thanked the good Lord
that although I am quite alone, I could never be bored!
I look out the window at the snow that now covers the earth
and in the darkness, stars are shining for all they are worth.
