A man struggles to remember where he is for flash fiction
“Stanley, how did you sleep last night? We wanted to loosen your restraints but were fearful that you may accidentally harm yourself. Hopefully they did not cause you too much discomfort.”

Stan Babashov raised his head to see who was talking. The room spun as he fought against the regime of drugs he had been subjected to for as far back as his short term memory could recall.

“We have a surprise for you today. Your wife has come by for a visit. If you promise to behave, maybe we can arrange for you to have some private time together. Would you like that?”

He let his head fall back as he raced to remember … to remember anything. This didn’t seem right. Nothing was as it should be.

“You remember your wife don’t you?” said the soft voice in the white lab coat, holding up a photograph.

The face did look familiar. Was he married? Was that his wife? No!!! I can’t let them brainwash me into what is not real! he silently told himself.

“That’s not my wife,” he said aloud.

“Now Stanley, we have been through this before, the accident has affected your memory. Why would we lie to you about your wife?”

“Don’t try to confuse me! I have no wife. None of this makes any sense. Who are you?”

He fought hard against the confusion. Training! He had been trained to fight back. He was a warrior! That was it. It all suddenly came back. He was a captain in the Earth’s Space Defense Alliance. Now he was a prisoner.”

“Listen you Drabak scum. Drug me all you want and I will still tell you nothing!”

The chameleon guise dissolved away as the lab coated lizard turned to the window and said “Up the dose.”
