A love story |
She was totally alone now, she looked around the empty apartment that once held all of her belongings and his together. Carla felt the vast emptiness of her home deep in her heart. She fought back the tears that she didn’t think she had left and went to leave the place they shared and made memories for the last time! One last looked around before she closed the door proved to be fatal against the battle of the tears and they streamed down her face. She put the last box in the back seat of her car and buckled herself in the front. The trip back to mom and dads would be a long and shameful one she thought, but the only trip that she could make now ! The only place she knew to go, home! Pulling out the gas station three hours away from where she really wanted to be, back in her life again, Carla sat in the car on the side of the road watching the rain pour down on the windshield. The turn signal was set toward the past. She sat there in silence arguing with herself in her head. What are you thinking? There is nothing back there now, just old memories and empty hopes. In her imagination she could see Steve busting through the apartment door, hoping to still find her there and begging her to come back to him. That single thought was the one that made her pull out into the street heading back to the life she praying was waiting for her. In her daze she didn’t see the traffic coming and as she started to move out into the road, the horn from the other car blasted! Carla slammed on the brakes just as the other car swerved to miss her. It traveled on down the road leaving her gripping the steering wheel in panic, her eyes wide and heart pounding. She sat there holding on while she tried to slow her breathing and collect herself. The car was completely quiet except for the turn signal that was still clicking and flashed toward the way she had just came, Carla sat there and stared down the road through the water that still flowed over the glass from the car window. She was starting to get control of herself when the tune from her cell phone blasted from the console beside her and made her jump, starting another round for her pounding heart. She picked up the phone hoping to see that it was Steve calling for her, but the screen flashed “mom calling “ Carla stared at the phone for a minute listening to it play its song, the disappointment overwhelmed her and she just sat there watching it ring until it came to a stop. Once again Carla dazed out her car window wondering what she should do, She thought about dialing Steve’s number herself, but to say what? If the response wasn’t good or he ignored her call all together, the further rejection would be more then she could handle right now. |
