Welcome to Whatsit's Wild World.

Sometimes I think we're all tightrope walkers suspended on a wire two thousand feet in the air, and so long as we never look down we're okay, but some of us lose momentum and look down for a second and are never quite the same again: we know.

1. I had to have a root canal Monday. I am going to be 50 years old in a minute and this was the first thing that was ever wrong with my teeth. I couldn't believe it. I thought I was on the home stretch as far as my teeth were concerned. Having a root canal wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but I was still overjoyed for it to be over.

2. I have bought my dogs some new dog food. I have been buying them Beneful and then wondering why they made such a mess every time they ate. I had come to the conclusion that I had some messy dogs and kept having to sweep up after them. My oldest daughter finally figured out that Jack, at least, was picking out the pieces he didn''t like and laying them on the floor. I wouldn't put it past some of the rest of them to be doing the same thing. So now I have beat them at their own game: this time I bought One, which appears to be all the same thing. Jack and Wimzy have already tasted it and they seem to like it, and silly old Mr. Jack isn't dropping any on the floor. Dern. Beckham and Fluff have yet to try it. We will see.

3. I went to the store this morning and bought some of my favorite ice cream: Denali Extreme Maximum Fudge Moose Tracks. Yes! I ate some for lunch as soon as I got home. I may hide the rest under the frozen vegetables before my family comes home.

4. My son Matt is on the High School Soccer Team. Yesterday they won the State Championship. Yay! I am proud of them. This is in contrast to the football team who didn't win one game this year. Last year I think they won exactly one: the first one.

5. I ordered an over the door ironing board. I have yet to take it out of the box because of being so busy, but evidently you just pull the ironing board down when you want to iron and then push it back up when you are through. I'm hoping this will encourage me to iron, since the worst part is having to go get the ironing board and try to figure out where to set it up. For some reason this house we live in was not blessed with outlets. Which is weird because a builder built it for himself, but he left electrical outlets out of his figuring. My grandfather build a house for my grandmother when I was little. As an electrician himself, he put in plenty of outlets all over the house. I'm kind of surprised this guy didn't build this house that way. However, I have a door that is near an unused outlet, so I am hoping this will encourage me to iron. I realize that I may be operating on wishful thinking here, but it's worth a try.

1. Anna Claire had her Treble Song performance today. Treble Song is an honor choir that girls from all over Mississippi had to try out for. Their choir director was from Bosnia and she wore a dress with piano keys all around the bottom. It was quite attractive, actually! AC has been in Treble Song a couple of years before this one, and Emily was in it before that. This is the last year any of our kids will be in it, since AC is going to graduate this year. It seems like the end of an era. AC's friend Cheryl and her mom and sister and stepfather came to the performance and we all went to the Broad Street Bakery afterward and had something nice and decadent.

2. Matt is in show choir. The choir director at the high school found out she could make a little more money by starting a show choir, so now we have a show choir, and my kid is in it. I am all for a teacher making more money doing whatever, even a little bit. This is the 4th year we have had a show choir and the 2nd year Matt has been in it. They have started going all over creation - well, all over Mississippi anyway - to competitions, and doing a great job. They came in first place at the one they went to today. It was two hours off, at Pearl River Community College, and he just got home not long ago, at 11:30 PM. Matt enjoys being in show choir and I am personally hoping that he will get a show choir scholarship to college when that time comes.

3. I bought some new dishes on Facebook. My dishes I got for my wedding have been broken over the years and I only have four left. Every time my mother has bought new dishes I have gradually inherited the ones she didn't want, which has made for quite the hodge-podge, dishwise. Also, I'm not sure what could have happened to all my glasses. We have gotten by on random miscellaneous glasses and plastic cups brought home from restaurants and caught at parades and things like that. No more! No more I tell you! I now am the proud owner of a set of dishes! And I went to Walmart and bought some actual glasses. I may have to start inviting people over for supper. When I get a dining room table I like rather than the random free one my husband came home with that doesn't even have room to seat the people in the family, much less guests.

4. Fluff is much better! (See last entry) She just has a little arthritis. No wonder, since she is almost 10 years old.

5. I'm sleepy as all get-out. Good night.

One of my dogs had to go to the vet today. She seems to be in a little pain - she yelped the other day when my daughter sat next to her on the couch. The vet thinks she is getting arthritis and gave her some medicine. They want her to come back next Friday for bloodwork and X-rays just to make sure. Her name is Fluff. Fluff used to be her nickname. When we got her, she was named Bitsy, but she was so extremely Fluffy that we called her Fluff. Finally we called her that so many times that she came to see it as her name. And it was a good thing, too. My mother got a new dog and named her Bitsy. I tell my mother all the time that she stole my dogs name, to which she always replies "Well, your dog had another name you could use." So far I haven't been able to come up with an answer to that.

Yesterday was Matt's birthday. He's 16. We planned the celebration for today, but we could have had it yesterday, we just didn't know. My husband has taken a preaching job in Lake, Mississippi, which is about an hour from where we live, and we thought he would be over there all day, since it was Sunday. However, the weather was supposed to be extremely bad last night and that church is mostly (heck, all but one couple) older people, so they wanted to cancel evening services so he wound up coming home mid-afternoon. The reason we didn't go to Lake with him this week is because Anna Claire had an all-weekend retreat with the youth of the church we used to go to and I had to pick her up from the church at 10:30. He says he had a good birthday, though, doing mostly spur-of-the-moment stuff. His friend Gunter came to our house, and Bristol from around the corner went with both of them to see a movie they had all been wanting to see, Escape Room.

Now we are getting ready to go out to eat lunch. We have caught a snag in Matt's indecisiveness however. With him it is a downfall to live in a place with too many restaurants, because now he can't decide where to go. He had decided on a place to go a few weeks ago and now he can't remember where that was. I texted his sister who is in college to get her to make suggestions, he tends to listen to listen to her, so maybe we will come to a conclusion before long.

I have a cough. I don't feel bad otherwise. I sound like I feel bad because my voice is trying to go out, but I don't even have a fever. I'm thinking I just have sinus drainage. It was raining the night my daughter had her sleep study and my shoes got so wet that they weren't quite dry the next morning. That's probably part of what brought this on.

I have been trying to avoid going to the store for cough medicine because I don't want to get out and I also don't want to spend the money. I found out that Benadryl will stop your cough. If you don't mind being in a stupor, Benadryl is GREAT for coughs. I took one last night and slept like a log. This morning I decided I would just be sleepy as long as I could quit coughing. I had stopped taking my Vitamin C because I was trying to cut down on the number of pills I take (all supplements, no prescriptions - mostly vitamins) but I guess that one is important.

My mother is determined I have the flu, but I took a flu shot in September, plus my temp is normal. So there. She keeps telling me just to rest and keep telling her that I am resting, but you can't just rest 24 hours a day. It's amazing how much will get backed up if I don't either do it myself or have the argument with my kids to do it themselves. Dern. Plus I don't feel bad enough just to stay in the recliner all day. I have been on a new eating plan (the word diet has fallen into disfavor, evidently) and I have extra energy. Which is good, but doesn't go with having a day of rest so you can recover from illness. Ah, well.

I know this is the second blog entry of five items and that life doesn't happen in groups of five, but mine has lately. So there.

1. It has rained and rained for days and days, to the point that I have declared my intention not to set foot out the door another time until it stops raining. Truly, I am frustrated with all this bad weather. My shoes got wet last night and still weren't all the way dry this morning. Ick. My dogs, who have a dog door, like to go out and get wet, then come in and love on me. Very funny.

2. Last night my 17-year-old daughter had a sleep study. I am quite sure she does not have sleep apnea. In fact, I am not positive why her doctor cooked this up, but I went with it. I stayed up there with her. We both slept better than I thought we would. I thought we would come home and fall into bed. Well, I did fall into bed, and it was SO COMFORTABLE, but guess what? I was wide awake and so was Anna Claire. It wasn't until around 1:00 this afternoon that we both felt sleepy.

3 I have discovered that a subscription to Reader's Digest magazine is only $15 for two years, so I subscribed to it. I used to love Reader's Digest when I was a teenager. In fact, my mother had this boyfriend whose mother had a great big collection of old copies of Reader's Digest and I loved going to her house to read them. She had them all in a row on a shelf next to the stairs in her house. I would sit on the stairs by the hour and devour as many issues as I could.

4. I ordered several things from this pizza place nearby for lunch. I wanted pasta, some wanted pizza, plus I ordered a dessert pizza, which I don't usually do. We sat here hungrily, looking out the window. Around fifteen minutes after it was supposed to get here, we felt as though we were going to wither away, so I called them. Their driver didn't show up to work. I sent my kids up there to get it. The lady working there felt so bad she gave us some free stuff and upsized our dessert pizza to a large.

5. I got my old Sherlock Holmes books out and I have been re-reading them. I had my first library job as a shelver at South Hills library when I was 18 years old. This is where I discovered I loved Arthur Conan Doyle's stuff and that he had written other things besides Sherlock.

Now you know what I know.

1. I dropped my phone and now it doesn't work. The people at the AT&T store said the digitizer didn't work and to take it to the Apple store. The people at the Apple store said there was a great long list I had to get on and it would be way this afternoon before a technician could see me. So now I am at home and I will drive back up there later. It's kind of peaceful, not having a phone.

2. My teenage daughter and my teenage son both cleaned up their rooms. They are really cleaned up, I tell you! The boy cleaned his up because he has this girlfriend and he wanted to be able to invite her over. The girl couldn't let her brother get ahead of her. The downside is that there are currently 8047 loads of clothes to wash, which I am currently enjoying procrastinating.

3. My car needs a new battery. My daughter who is home from college has been loaning me her car. I am waiting until I get my check on the third of January to see about getting it fixed. It's kind of peaceful not having a car.

4. I have been enjoying my Snoopy and Charlie Brown calendar for a year. I regret that I only have three and a half more days to look at it. This is one of the few years I haven't been given a wall calendar for Christmas. My college-age daughter did give me a small appointment type calendar. Well, I guess I will have the pleasure of picking out my own calendar for a change, something I haven't done in years.

5. I have started back to drinking. No, not that! Diet Mountain Dew. I decided a couple of years ago to see what it was like not drinking DMD all the time. It had been about 25 years since I hadn't drunk about 2 or 3 a day. I started drinking it the year it came out, I think, which was in the late 80s. So I gave them up except for once or twice a month as an occasional treat. What I have been drinking is unsweet iced tea, which I actually like. As much of a sweet tooth as I have, I have never liked sweet iced tea for some reason. I don't admit this to everybody here in the American South. It is somewhat of a heresy not to drink sweet tea. But I digress. After these couple of years of not drinking DMD except every once in a while, my husband was going to the store and I asked him to bring me one. It had been a couple of months. He misunderstood and brought me a twelve pack. I have been going strong ever since. I have decided that God wants me to drink Diet Mountain Dew. He put it on the earth for me to drink. So there.

I remember blogging every single day. I'm not sure how six months got by. Dern.

My mother has a thing about going to the cemetery every Christmas and Easter and placing flowers at the gravesites of my grandparents and great-grandparents. It has to be good weather and she has to feel relatively decent before she will actually go, so it usually gets right up to almost the holiday before we make it over there. "Over there" is two hours away in Clarke County Mississippi. This year, Saturday the 22nd was the date. We stopped and picked up my aunt. She lives about a mile from the cemetery.

When we got there, we saw a lot of the headstones were leaning and broken. It is usually extremely well kept. It turns out that somebody was driving by the cemetery when they went to sleep and lost control of their car. It did a good bit of damage. Evidently his auto insurance is going to pay for repairs but they have not had time to do them yet. My personal grandparents' and great-grandparents' headstones were not affected but I have other various and sundry relatives whose were. It was quite unnerving.

On the opposite side, can you imagine going to sleep at the wheel and waking up in the middle of a cemetery?

One good thing about this trip: I found out that this cemetery is where my mother wants to be buried. I honestly didn't know. I'll probably be the one making the arrangements and you can't exactly ask these things, at least not with my particular mom. She has two husbands she has buried in two different towns, plus there is the cemetery where her family is, which is where she says she wants to be, right next to her daddy. I kind of thought she might want to be next to my daddy, but evidently not. At least that mystery is solved and I won't have to wonder when the time comes.

I went to the orthopedic doctor today. My fracture is healing but not very fast. The doctor said that it is bonding well, which sounded good even to my un-medical ears. He showed me the x-ray, which was nice. The main thing is that it doesn't hurt nearly as bad, for which I am thankful. I am still using a walker to get around, though. I go back in six weeks. That is my whole summer. Not that it matters for me personally since I don't work, but my kids will be going back to school shortly after I go to the doctor again. Nothing I can do about it, though. All three of them and my husband have had good adventures this summer already anyway - hubby and Emily went to Colorado for a wedding, and Anna Claire and Matt just got back from church camp. So they don't have anything to complain about anyway! I'm just thankful I'm a lot better.

I renewed my membership today, so I have 365 days to blog to my heart's content. I always say that, though.

I see in my last entry that I was still under the impression that I had sprained my knee. I found out about 3 weeks ago that I fractured my tibia. First I went to the Emergency Room at River Oaks Hospital - not sure when this was, back in April I think. This was on a Monday night. My knee had been killing me for no reason that I knew. I fell in the bathroom a while back. That's the only thing I could think of that could have affected it. Anyway, they X-rayed it and said I had tendonitis and it should be well in a couple of weeks. A couple of weeks later I went back and told them it was still hurting. They told me I needed an MRI and to call Mississippi Sports Medicine. I scheduled an appointment with Mississippi Sports Medicine and told them I needed an MRI. When I got there, this 800-year-old doctor just felt of it and told me I had arthritis and maybe some bone spurs. He was going to refuse to prescribe any pain medication until my husband spoke up. Evidently the person in front of him being in excruciating pain affected him not one bit. I've thought since then of suing him. When I got home I called the first place that came up on my Google Search, which was Capital Orthopedic. They scheduled me for an MRI, at which I found out I had a fractured tibia. I was overjoyed to finally have a diagnosis and I am astonished that it took all of that to find out such a simple thing.

I still may sue the 800-year-old guy. Dern. I ought to talk bad about him on Facebook.

So, it still hurts, but not near as much. I go back to Capital Orthopedic on June 12.

Other goings on:

- My husband and oldest daughter went to Colorado to attend my husband's old friend's daughter, which was today. They will be home Tuesday.

- My other two kids leave for church camp Monday. My daughter's friend is going and she is coming to pick them up for me since I am trying not to drive.

- That leaves me here by myself Monday and most of Tuesday. I have plenty of groceries and everything else I need, and I plan on watching just exactly what I want to watch on TV. I am kind of looking forward to it. Peace and quiet!

- If all else fails, my mom and stepfather live around the corner. Hopefully I don't have to resort to calling them for help, but I can if I have to. My mom doesn't mind doing things for other people as long as they don't mind having to hear about it for the rest of eternity.

- Now you know what I know.
