An afternoon playing "Hidden in the Clouds" |
“What’s that one look like to you?” Renee quietly asked her sister, Susan. Susan giggled, “An Elephant!” Renee pointed to the big, white fluffy cloud that filled up a large portion of the sky and asked, “What about that one there?” “A Snake! A really, really long snake!” she squealed and covered her eyes. “And that one?” Renee pointed again. Susan quickly peered out from the holes in her fingers and responded, “That one looks like Muffin.” She giggled and rolled around in the grass. Muffin is the family cat. “You are very right. It does look like Muffin.” Renee agreed. “Let’s head home. Mom should have lunch ready.” Renee, age 20, is Susan’s older sister. Finally home on a break from college, she brought Susan to this field to play their favorite game together. Although much older than Susan, this game was the one thing they loved to do together even when Renee was in high school. This was their time to be sisters. It was natural for Renee to bring Susan to the field this morning. Entering the white farmhouse by way of the kitchen, the screen door let out its’ familiar creaks. It reminded Renee of when she was Susan’s age. Her mom, covered in her favorite hand-stitch decorated apron, had her arms full of silverware for the table. “I’ll get that, Mom,” Renee offered, taking the silverware out of her mom’s hands. She started to set the table, so her mom could start bringing lunch to the table. She heard her mom ask her sister, “Did you have a good time?” “The bestest time ever! Renee is the bestest sister in the world!” Susan exclaimed in excitement. As she listened to Susan go on about the different things she found in the clouds, Renee smiled and thought to herself, this is home. Home is where the heart is. -Kristi |
