Wife brings home the bacon entry for daily flash fiction challenge 300 word max |
Sweet Pea So now we have a pig. Not just any pig. We have a fifteen-hundred dollar pig named Sweet Pea. Sharon brought her home a week ago. My wife had grown up on a farm with animals everywhere. We agreed that once we got our own place with a yard, we would get a dog. Not a pig; a dog. Big difference. I came home from work to find all the trapping one might associate with a dog. There was a shiny water dish on the kitchen floor. A couple of chew-toy looking things were lying around the living room. There was even a dog house on the back porch. The house concerned me a little. It was big - really big. I had agreed on a dog, not a horse. After a few minutes, Sharon walked in the front door. I was a little confused initially. At first glance I thought she was walking a possum or maybe a wombat. My rational mind then translated the vision into a really ugly dog. That had to be it. Not in a million years would I have guessed pig. I stood there staring at the thing like a cow staring at a fence post. What could that thing be? Sharon was quick on the draw. I'll have to give her that. "She's house trained and smart and clean and quiet. She is such a sweet pig. I really love her already. She loves me too. I can see it in her eyes" Sharon paused for a breath. Before she could continue I interrupted "A pig? What are we going to do with that? Eat it for breakfast?" Sharon played her ace and the tears came in a torrent. Would that dog house be mine or the pig's? So now we have a pig. Word count 300 |
