Jude, who didn't expect Ms.Foodley to carry out her promise, was surprised to find an envelope containing some money out in front of his door. He was even more surprised because no one had stolen it. He went back in, scratching his head. What was this place about? It was only his second day here, and he had witnessed a murder, his apartment had been broken into, and he had found money in front of his door. He picked up the Yellow Pages, which he had bought using some of the small amount of money he had with him. He spent an hour trying to find a security guard, and finally chose a man called Jon. Jon was bald, had a mustache, and looked at everyone suspiciously. Had Jude made the right decision with hiring him? He introduced their new guard to the residents and left to take a walk. He passed lots of people, all of them different, all of them strange. There were women wearing posh outfits walking animals that looked like rats. There were men spitting on lamp posts and trees. Finally, Jude was disgusted and went back to his apartment. He sat on the cold wooden chair, thinking. Were his parents thinking about him? He picked up his cellphone. No calls, one message. His heart skipped a beat. Had they really remembered him? He was all too disappointed to find out that the message had been sent by the phone company. Sulking, he slept early, at 6 o' clock, for there was not much else to do. He was woken suddenly at night, his watch told him that it was 1 am. There was no noise. What had happened? He got up, opened the lights and squinted. He thought his mind was playing tricks on him. That couldn't be the raincoat and the hat, could it? He approached them fearfully. They were indeed real. He barely stopped himself from screaming out loud. He quickly ran downstairs. Jon was asleep! Jude couldn't believe this.Of course someone would enter the house if the night guard was SLEEPING. He tried to wake him up, in vain. They must have drugged him, he thought. He suddenly felt bad about blaming the guard, but he was terrified more than anything, if these people were capable of druggging an innocent night guard, who knows what else they would do? All because of a measly shopping trip, Jude felt himself in the middle of a big mess, he knew would be hard, VERY hard, to clean up.
