A story about my mom's trip to the hospital.
Just a little bit of an intro, this is the longest poem I've written, it was about my mother being in the hospital for about a month and a week, and me being left in charge of my 4 little brothers. My mother is very important to me, and the saddest part was that she spent her birthday in the hospital. Without further ado though....

My Crazy Month
By Brian Dietz

My life has been insane, as of late,
To be honest with you, it’s not really that great.
My mother has been in the hospital a lot,
My relationship with my mom is all that I’ve got.
She’s helped me with all the problems I’ve had.
She’s calmed me down when my brothers made me mad.

She went into the hospital and left me all alone,
The first days, she couldn’t call because she didn’t have a phone.
Eventually, she got one and I called everyday.
She always seemed so interested in what I had to say.
I told her all my problems, like I have since I was a kid,
And she helped out with everything, just like she always did.

My older brother said he was going to pay her a visit.
I instantly went and bought my ticket.
My aunts took my brothers, it made me so happy.
For it was my mother that I was going out to see.
We came in, she looked at us, a smile on her face.
It looked like all she could do was stare off into space.

We saw the room, looked like built for one, housing two.
She told me everything that was wrong, every word of it was true.
I tried to help her out, like she’s always done for me.
She didn’t want to be there, she wanted to be free.
But she knew it was for her own good, to help her get cured.
But she missed her kids, plus she was really bored.

We left after a while, happy we went there.
I was still alone with my brothers, wondering how I’d fare.
My step dad was there, wondering where we went.
And the smiles on our faces were quickly downward bent.
Now I had to deal with this, on top of all other things.
To make sure to not set him off and make him start complaining.

Everything went fine for maybe the first week.
But that was when he started to freak.
He said we were lazy, didn’t do a thing.
That’s when I hid and gave my brother a ring.
I sent him a message saying scared out of my wits.
He called my mother and she threw a fit.

My mom called my step dad, she was quite angry.
He went off and snapped, unlike what they agreed.
My aunt came and picked up my brothers,
And I got to go out with my older brother.
He calmed me down, and helped me get through it.
He let me stay at his house for a little bit.

Finally he brought me back home,
I walked in the house to find that I was alone.
It was a good thing, it means my step dad wasn’t there.
All he did was watch TV, he didn’t really care.
My Aunt Jane came over, she was more helpful,
She helped me keep them under control.

A long week had passed by, and I got the news.
My mom was coming home, it was too good to be true.
It was too good, she wasn’t coming to her home,
She was, in fact, going to one of my aunt’s homes.
She was there for a long time, forever it seemed.
I saw her walking through our front door, only in my dreams.

I had completely forgotten, it was my road test the next day,
I was very nervous, the feeling was there to stay.
I made a right turn, it seemed fairly easy,
Until I saw a Hummer back out right in front of me.
My examiner beat me, he hit the brakes first,
He immediately failed me, I felt like the worst.

My mom was so sad, I couldn’t drive to see her,
I would just have to wait until she was feeling better.
It was almost 3 long weeks later, she let me know,
She was starting home to see me, even though there was snow.
She wanted to see how I was holding up that day.
She also let me know she had the doctor on Friday.

We went out to the city, me and my mother,
The kids were in school we went to the doctor.
We waited and waited for a very long time,
In the waiting room, we were as quiet as mimes.
The doctor called her in, and after a while she came back.
She told my mother to go home and get back on track.

I was so happy; my mother was coming back,
I help her now more than ever; I’ve picked up the slack.
She is still quite sick, a heart condition for 8 years, you see.
But this is the one place she really loves to be.
She’s back home with her sons, what can I say?
Except, that neither of us would have it any other way.
