This short story is about kids who recieve a rewarding snow day.
“ Buzz! Buzz!” I heard that ear- shattering alarm clock of mine going off. As I rolled over and slammed my hand against it to turn it off I caught a glimpse of my digital clock. The time read 7:30, and I was going to be late for school once again.
Hurriedly rushing down the stairs I ran right past mom, almost making her spill her freshly squeezed orange juice, and into the laundry room. As I was pulling my snug jeans up around my waist and zipping them up, Jake walks in. Jake, my younger brother, stated in a scratchy voice, “ Dude, you know there’s  no school today, right?” I just nod my head in disbelief.
Jake was correct. When I got to our huge picture window to look out, all that could be seen was a thick fresh layer of snow lying on the ground. It was truly amazing. There’s snow here in Carville, Georgia.
Quickly, I sprinted into the kitchen singing loudly, “ No school! No school! It’s a snow day…how cool!” While in there, I sat down and had a filling bowl of Fruit Loops. Mom and I talked until her and dad were ready to leave for the real estate office. She gave me a quick kiss on the cheek, shouted out some commands to Jake, and then they were off for another day of work.
Soon as the door slammed, I paced up the spiral staircase and over to the cordless telephone. I dialed the number of my best friend, Bethany’s, house and waited for her to pick up. When she did, I consulted with her to see if she wanted to go sleigh riding with me up on Moe- Joe hill. Of course Bethany was eager, so we decided to meet at the public library in about twenty minutes.
Once I hung up the phone, I franticly searched for all my snow gear. All my clothes were finally on and now I was ready to go. Rapidly, I wrote Jake a note stating where I was going and that I would be back shortly.
When I got down to the library, Bethany wasn’t there yet. I was expecting it since she was always running casually late. About five minutes later Bethany showed up with her snow goggles, toboggan, and everything else on. We talked for a few minutes and decided to go get Maria and then head over to Moe- Joe hill for some intense sledding action.
After getting Maria from her sea-side mansion we began our journey to Moe- Joe hill. Moe- Joe hill was only the BEST sledding spot in town. Every kid around knew about it‘s perfect packing snow for sled paths and its tendency to be iced over for speed. When we arrived there we were astonished to see not a soul there. Without any suspicion, all of us began our exciting sledding day.
Sitting on our sleds to catch a breather, we realized we‘d been sledding for quite some time. Temperatures were beginning to rise when my cell phone, stuffed in my upper body under armor, started to vibrate. I got to my phone a little too late. As I checked my missed calls list I soon knew it was my mom who was trying to reach me.
I called her back immediately because it is very unlikely for her to call me during her work hours unless of an emergency. As it rang my heart began to thump faster and faster in fright. “Finally mom picks up,” I thought. I didn’t even get the words “ What did you need”  out before she started in. “ You know how me and your dad come home for lunch everyday? Well, I’m sorry sweetie but I  don’t think we’re going to make it today. We were driving down the icy road home when we heard a crash in front of us so loud it echoed. Your dad and I seem to think it happened somewhere up on Old Bear mountain. We’re going to check into it. I hope this is ok with you?” “ Yes, fine,” I  replied in a mellow tone. “ Ok see you later honey.”
Soon as I was off the phone I raced home to reassure myself it wasn’t Jake up on Old Bear mountain. I had no time to waste informing Maria and Bethany where I was going. I told them bye and raced away hoping to get home in record time.
By the time I reached the house the dry, bone- chilling wind had started to take toll on me. When I stepped  inside our family room I was relieved to see  Jake finishing his research project on Christopher Columbus that he’d done for pleasure. We sat on the new violet tented couch, dad had won in a raffle from Big Sandy Superstores, until folks came in.
Jake and I were in preparation for the rescue story of a life time from our parents as they swayed in. Soon as all of us were seated in the family room mom began. “ After I got off the phone with you, Kelly,  your dad and I trudged up the mountainside. About half way up, we came upon this knocked over tree. As we came closer to the stump and roots of the tree I heard talking and laughing. When we got completely there the youngsters were laughing hysterically. The two boys explained how they hit the tree and that must have caused the crashing noise. Therefore, your dad and I weren’t heroes after all.”
