Captivating Words

I would like to ask one question if I may,
Just to suspend my personal disbelief;
Do people really mean all the things they say?

With the questionable things I hear each day
It can get to the point where I need relief.
So, I would ask this one question, if I may.

(I mean, even if the answer isn’t okay,
It can still lessen the overbearing grief
Of knowing, or not, if they mean what they say.)

People never stop talking (to my dismay)
They rarely even attempt to keep things brief.
This question will end up putting me away.

You know: The classic straightjacket cliché?
         (Pushed into a padded room.)  “In ya go chief”
        Wait.  No, you can’t honestly mean what you say.
        I want – no – I need to see the light of day.  You can’t just lock me up like a common thief,
        Therefore, I would like to know, if it’s okay; Do you really mean that I’m in here to stay?
