Great E-book by Native American Novelist A. Miller.
A young Lakota (Sioux) asked his Grandfather, “Why does everything have to be so difficult?”

The older and wiser man replied, “Because in life there are two of everything. If you did not have sadness, you would not know joy…”

Balance is the key to life. In life we are faced with many difficulties along our path. At times life gets so hard, it’s a task to breathe. You may call them challenges or tests. You may think the world is out to get you.

I assure you, it is neither one. In life there must be a balance of all things. Without the rain, there would be no rainbow. (Ojibwe)

For a writer, one of those bad things that can happen is writer’s block. But is it truly a ‘block’ or just a signal to pause? If you are stuck and can’t think of where to go next with your story, try leaving it alone for a time.

Go about your every day chores but in the mean time keep your last scene that you wrote in your head. While you are washing the dishes, contemplate different conversations your characters might have. If you are waiting in line at the grocery store you can do the same thing. You are getting things done and it will give you more time to write.

Another thing you can try is this; listen to the world. Listen to other people’s conversations. Don’t make yourself obvious of course because people really hate when you do this. But listen to their responses. Watch their facial expressions.

As a writer you are a translator. You must take the world on and translate it into black and white words that create an image in peoples minds.

If you can do this you will be successful.

Writer’s block is not the end of all things. It is a pause. A pause which gives you time to relflect and play with words in your head. This is also useful when you want to tell someone something but you’re not sure how to do it.

Think.

Then write.

Think.

Then talk.
