A free verse about domestic violence? Think metaphor. The answer's in the poem. Find it!
Assault of a Free Spirit

I hold the weapon in my hand
Pure focus of mind
And you just sit there and scream
Hit me!
And I do

And you fly through the air
And I stare as you soar
With my dreams and my hopes in your keeping
Be mine
But you won’t

Glistening dimpled whiteness you lie
Naked in the sand. Won’t you take me?
I’m yours if you’re strong
So I try
But too weak

Not of will but of skill
To bring you to task and control
Your independent spirit
Give you up?
No, not yet

You will one day do my will
And I won’t have to scream and gasp
As you choose to seek your own way
Yet call me
To follow

So I stay with you time and time
In hopeful expectation of your compliance
Your submission. When I’ll cease to curse
And hit you
No more
