A childrens short story, first in hopefully a collection all along the same basis
                                      The Medicine Fairy

This is a story about a little girl called Tillie, but you see she’s not just a normal little girl, she is very special and if you look very closely you might just see the reason why.

Can you see them yet?

No? Well just behind Tillie’s back you can just about see her delicate and glittering fairy wings! She wears the prettiest pink dress and has long dark hair that flows down her back and she is happy and spends her time playing amongst the flowers knowing all the young children who are poorly and taking their medicine and getting better. Because that is her job you see, every fairy in this part of the woods has a job, all different kind of jobs, but Tillie’s special job is to stop children being scared of taking medicine.

Occasionally though when the rain starts to fall, Tillie would listen to what the drops had to say, and look deep inside, next time u see a raindrop, see if you can look inside, and maybe you will see a small brightly coloured rainbow just like Tillie sees, sometimes the raindrops would sigh and sound sad, Tillie would always ask ‘oh raindrop falling on my flower, whatever could be wrong?

The raindrop would answer back ‘oh Tillie sweet Tillie, there is this lovely child called Chloe she has got such a bad cough but she will not take her medicine’

‘Oh dear’ said Tillie ‘well we must see if we can help this little girl’ and once she gathers her magical items together the raindrop and Tillie head off to find the poorly child who wont take her medicine.

Not long after Tillie arrives at this lovely little house, painted all white and the moonlight shone off the beautiful pink flowers winding their way up the walls, yet the house was in darkness, so Tillie and the raindrop flew around to the back of the house and there at the top of the house one little light still shone out against the darkness.

Tillie and her friends flew up to take a peek through the window and sitting inside, wrapped warm and snug inside her duvet sat Chloe.

Through the window Tillie could hear poor Chloe cough and cough and cough it was heartbreaking. Sitting next to Chloe was her mummy who held a cloth to her head and was trying to cool her down, and asking Chloe ‘please take your medicine Chloe, it will make this nasty cough go straight away’ but Chloe’s mouth stayed firmly shut and she shook and shook her head No!

Tillie watched all this from the window ledge, listening through a small gap where the window was slightly open. She would have to wait until Chloe was on her own before she could talk to her. Eventually Chloe’s mummy said she was going downstairs for a glass of water to help with the coughing and she left the room and closed the door.

As soon as Chloe’s mummy had left the room, Tillie flew straight in and landed with a small plop on a startled Chloe’s bed. She sat bolt upright and exclaimed ‘What is going on! And who are you?

‘Hush, my name is Tillie’  said Tillie placing her fingers to her lips, ‘I came to see you, and the raindrop told me how poorly you are, I came to see for myself and find out why you wont take your medicine child’

‘Because’ cried Chloe, who was beginning to get a bit upset. ‘It takes yucky and I don’t like it’

‘Oh Chloe, I do understand medicine can taste horrible and sometimes I wish they would change it to make it taste so much better don’t you? Tillie said.

‘Yes’ exclaimed Chloe ‘why can’t it taste like strawberries or chocolate that would be much nicer’

‘Yes it would’ laughed Tillie ‘but you know what? Maybe we can change it a little so it does taste better’

‘Ohhh could you really do that?’ gasped Chloe, ‘well’ replied Tillie ‘lets give it a try, but it will only work if you believe it will with all your heart’

‘I do, I do’ whispered Chloe ‘and I so want to get better’

‘Then lets waste no more time and get to work before mummy gets back ‘ said Tillie.
Tillie reached into her little magical bag and pulled out a special little bottle, she opened it up very carefully and sprinkled some of the beautiful golden fairy dust that came on over Chloe.

‘Now then Chloe that should do it’ she said ‘but you have to believe it will work remember’

‘Oh yes’ exclaimed Chloe ‘I believe’

Tillie smiled and gave Chloe the biggest hug a tiny fairy could give and was about to leave when Chloe spoke again.

‘Tillie’ she said in a quiet voice. ‘Yes Chloe whatever’s wrong? answered Tillie.

‘Weellll’ replied Chloe ‘my mummy says I should put this special cream on my back and front it smells like mints but it looks really yucky and I don’t like it, can we change that to?

‘Let me take a peek at it first and see what it is’ replied the fairy. Chloe passed Tillie the small green jar and as Tillie opened it she caught the strong smell of eucalyptus, which is a special plant all the way from Australia, which is a very long way away, and it is very good for you. But you are right it doesn’t look very nice does it’

So Tillie sat for a moment and had a hard think, then she had an idea! She reached back into her magical bag and brought out yet another small pot of fairy dust only this one shimmered with many different colours of the rainbow

‘Now’ said Tillie to Chloe ‘I am going to sprinkle this inside this pot of yucky cream and although it will still smell like eucalyptus  it wont look so scary’ When you look inside you will see all the colours of the rainbow inside and when mummy rubs it on your chest to help with your cough you will feel the magic of the rainbow helping you to get better soon’

Chloe’s eyes were wide open as Tillie handed the special pot of cream to her. ‘Now be quick Chloe mummy is on her way back up with your water, will you promise me now to be a good girl and take your medicine and use your cream so you will get better soon?

‘Oh Tillie I promise’ whispered Chloe excitedly. Tillie quickly gave Chloe a small kiss on the forehead and flew off back to the window ledge just in time to see Chloe’s mummy walk back through the door looking very tired.

‘Hello sweetheart’ Chloe’s mummy said ‘I’ve got you a glass of water, have a little sip then we’ll see about going back to the dr’s to get your medicine changed for a nicer one tomorrow morning’

Chloe sat straight up in bed nearly knocking the glass of water out of her mummy’s hand. ‘No mummy I don’t want a new medicine, I like this medicine now, I promise I’ll take it every time. And even that yucky cream’
Well Chloe’s mummy was so surprised she just sat there for a minute staring at her daughter, ‘okay’ she said ‘lets try again’ but before she could reach for the bottle of medicine Chloe had already grabbed it and was holding it out to her.

Chloe’s mummy slowly opened the bottle of medicine, still not expecting Chloe to really have some, but by time she had got the top off the bottle and poured some onto the little spoon Chloe had her mouth wide open like a little baby bird and she gulped it down in one go would you believe!

‘Mmmmmm, Chocolate! Squealed Chloe, much to her mummy’s surprise and confusion. ‘Next the euucolptusky thingy tree cream’ Chloe said as she tried to pronounce the right name for the eucalyptus tree Tillie had told her.

‘Right ok Chloe left your top up so I can rub this on and stop this nasty coughing’ and as she rubbed it on Chloe could feel a warm tingling spreading all the way down to the tips of her toes and to the top of her head. In fact it made her feel warm and sleepy already. She curled up in bed and as her mummy covered her in her duvet so she was nice and snug and gave her a kiss goodnight she heard Chloe whisper ‘goodnight mummy’ and even quieter ‘goodnight Tillie’

Tillie watched all this from the window ledge, smiled a very happy smile. Fluttered her wings together, and flew home to wait until she was needed again.

The End.
