A poem that wrestles with my evangelical upbringing. |
October 2006 Which Way to God? The Conversation. All aboard! All aboard! This way to God! The platform is closing, no time for delay! Excuse me, Mr. Conductor, but is this the right train? Hurry up, hurry up! The door is this way. There's only one track, and only one train. Could I talk to the Engineer, could I change my seat? No standing, no walking, no changing seats. The train is in motion, God is this way. Look, sir! The sheep, the cows, the horses so free! No looking at scenery, the track runs ahead. There's no point, so face forward. God is this way. Fields, rivers, hills... Can we look? Can we pause? One way, you say, but the horizon's so broad! NO talking, NO questions. This train makes no stops. God is this way so SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!! Mister Conductor, I've heard your rules and your talk, and if God is this way then I'd rather walk. November 2009 One Train to God: The Argument. All aboard! All aboard! God is this way! The platform is closing, no time for delay! Excuse me, Mr. Conductor, but is this the right train? There's only one track, and only one train. Hurry up, now. Get on! You're blocking the lane. Only one? But other conductors say they, too, go this way. Trust me, they lie. And we're soon underway. Now, you're holding us up; would you rather stay? But the schedule was full of trains from here to there. I'm too busy for your questions; get out of my hair. Be a good girl and just sit quiet over there. Are you sure? I don't know, I'll ask the Engineer... Hey, sit down, kid. He's busy, He can't spare an ear. If you're good, you can see Him, maybe, when we get there. Fields, rivers, hills... Can we look? Can we pause? One way, you say, but the horizon's so broad! NO talking, NO questions. This train makes no stops. God is this way so SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!! Mr. Conductor, your way is all rules and talk, and if God is this way then I'd rather walk. Errata: now get out of my way! The train is in motion, God is this way. I can't see from this seat, I'll sit over here... could I change my seat? No standing, no walking, we're underway. |
