songs that wrote themselves
Just some of my song lyrics. If like me you grew up in the 50's and 60's, there's a load of folk, jazz, blues, pop and rock n' roll rattling around in your brain challenging you to write something as good. Maybe that's too much to hope for, but anyway, here they are . . . .

“High Times, Low Times”

We had us some high times
We had us some low times
We had us enough time to know
You can’t make a love last
When passion is long past
That kind of love just won’t grow

Blue and melancholy,
Sad, depressed and lonely,
Crying all the time
Teardrops fill your eyes
Making you realize
You just can’t hide
The pain deep inside

We had us some high times
We had us some low times
And now our love is all done
A love can turn sour
Sour as bitter wine
But when the last drop is gone
A sad taste will linger

“Murderer’s Row Blues”

I was down on my luck
Didn’t have nowhere to go
But the home of last chance losers
The place called Murderer’s Row

It’s damp and cold and dirty
The wind cuts like a knife
If being poor don’t kill you
Man the thugs will take your life

Every evening after dark
Gunmen come out to play
There’s nothing but murder and mayhem
All night long till just fore day

When you run out of money
The misery ain’t got no end
Not a soul knows your name
You haven’t even got a friend

If I ever get lucky
It’s down the road I’ll go
And I never will return
To the place called Murderer’s Row

“The Hobo Jungle in the Sky”

CHORUS:
This old boxcar’s bound for heaven
Hobo jungle in the sky
Tell Saint Peter I’m no angel
But I’ll be comin’ by and by

All my life I’ve been a hobo
Never had no place to stay
Rode the rails from here to Frisco
Broke and hungry all the way

[CHORUS]

Dig my grave beside a railyard
Out beneath the western sky
Tell my buddies how I’ll miss them
They’ll be with me by and by

[CHORUS]

Give my boots to a poor old hobo
My hat and coat to the engineer
Say farewell to the cruel old brakeman
It’s the last time I’ll be stopping here

[CHORUS]

“Where Have You Been My Darling Young Son”
variation on traditional song, “Lord Randal”

Oh where have you been my darling young son
Oh where have you been my ill-fated one
I crossed a wide valley
And climbed a high mountain
I swam a deep river
And fain would lie down

Oh where have you been my darling young son
Oh where have you been my ill-fated one
I danced in a meadow
Sashayed through the town
Got drunk at a tavern
And fain would lie down

Oh where have you been my darling young son
Oh where have you been my ill-fated one
I loved a fair maiden
And killed a bad man
I fought with the bailiff
And fain would lie down

Oh where have you been my darling young son
Oh where have you been my ill-fated one
I ran through the brambles
Far away from the hounds
I ran till my heart burst
And fain would lie down

Oh what shall I do my darling young son
Oh what shall I do my ill-fated one
Find a field of green clover
Lay me under the ground
My rambling is over
And I fain would lie down

“On the all night oldies show”

Rock and Roll
And down home soul
On my transistor radio

Good Golly Miss Molly
And Mustang Sally
On the all night oldies show

Holding your hand
While our favorite band
Played the songs you loved to sing

[CHORUS
It was rock n’ roll
And down home soul
On the all night oldies show
REPEAT]

Linda Lou
And Run Around Sue
Rockin’ to a be bop beat

Round and round
Groovin’ to the sound
And Dancing in the Street

CHORUS

Tossin’ and Turnin’
Like a big wheel churnin’
Twistin’ till the break of day

Fun, Fun, Fun
Do doo ron ron
Just a-Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay

Way back when
We played again and again
All the songs you loved to sing

CHORUS
-- On the all night oldies show

“Got To Be With My Baby”

I love a girl from the poor part of town,
Society people try to put her down
But when we’re together it feels so right,
So I’m gonna see my baby tonight

CHORUS:
I don’t care what the people say,
Got to be with my baby
I don’t care what the people say,
Got to be with my baby

Her parents warned me to stay away,
But I haven’t seen her since yesterday
We’ll meet in an alley cross the railroad tracks
With only a blanket to cover our backs

[CHORUS]

Lying together on the cold damp ground,
We’ll make love with nobody around
Daylight comes I’ll be by her side,
Holding her tight fills my heart with pride

[CHORUS]

As a songwriter, I’m mainly a lyricist, but I play the guitar (blues) and have composed a few tunes. I also write screenplays.
