An Empty Dream Lips quivering, the young woman packed her bags, preparing to leave the island and the vacation behind. It was time to go home, only a few short hours until the plane was due to leave but she needed to unwind. A vacation romance was an empty dream. A vacation romance was what she had desired; she had laughed and danced with a handsome boy, perhaps drinking a little too much, feeling beautiful, desirable, her heart filled with unimaginable joy. A weaver of deception, the boy paid no attention to her protests that it was time to end the celebration. Her head felt heavy, and she rested it on his shoulder as he led her out to his car, he was filled with elation. A few hours later, her friends departed for the airport, chatting and laughing, eager to begin the journey home. When they realized she was not with them, they thought she would make another flight, coming back on her own. Souveniers were scattered, but none of it mattered, she was beyond caring, unable to escape from the sea. Searches provided no clues, families dreaded the news as they waited for what seemed like an eternity. Their hope almost gone, they would somehow go on; finding the answers was what they now strived for. Justice was really blind and they were unable to find any trace of the girl there on the island or the shore. Years later, still no trace of a once smiling face; could be the sea claimed her as its very own. Somewhere there's a boy who knows the answers that will come back to haunt him when he is alone. A vacation romance was an empty dream. 3/14/07 |
