Dare to be Yourself

I wrote this poem in a college poetry class I took.  We had to write a poem about rebellion and I decided since most of my poems rhyme, I wanted to create a poem that was different from my normal work.  I was pleased with the outcome, although I still find it weird that the poem does not rhyme!! 


Dare to be Yourself

I don’t want to conform
to what is considered the norm.
I desire to be known for who I am
not who society expects me to be.

I will not be timid of authority
and let it control my life:
If they tell me to sit,
I will stand.
If they tell me to be silent,
I will shout.

I will stand up for my rights
and fight for freedom.
I will demand that my voice be heard
and hope my life makes a difference
in the years to come.
