just some thoughts
These are pieces taken out of a book I am working on. I considered them both for the opening of the story but cannot decide on just one. I've thought about using both of them, just at different parts in the story, but just can't make up my mind. I know they both need a lot of work, but any advice would be so much appreciated!
thanks

#1

The strength it took to try and open her eyes that morning quickly reminded Kate of just how much energy she was going to have to put forth to make it through, yet another day in this life.
When she finally managed to get her eyes open, the unforgiving sunlight penetrated through sleepy eyelids and caused her to quickly close them once again.
Kate slowly and cautiously re-opened them. Looking around the strange room, Kate realized she hadn't the slightest idea where she was. Her memory seemed to have faded into nothing more than an almost unbearable, pounding headache.

Breathing in her first breath of the morning, Kate realized every part of her body ached horribly. She opened her eyes, looked around, and realized she wasn't anywhere she was familiar with.
"Where am I?" she asked herself repeatedly.
Trying to dig deep into her memory, Kate realized there really wasn't anything there. She can't remember what day it is, or even what month.
"How did I get here?" she questions herself again.
Her thoughts were then interrupted by a husky, yet feminine, voice.
"She looks much better than she did yesterday" the familiar voice said.
Kate stares and the woman and suddenly remembers that is her mother. She tries to speak but nothing comes out. She reaches up and finds there is some sort of tube inserted in her mouth.
Confused, Kate looks back up at her mother, who is speaking with what appears to be a nurse.
"How could she do this?" Kate's mother sobs.
Kate closes her eyes, trying to figure out what she's done. Drifting off into a light sleep, Kate cannot believe what she is seeing.
