Jill had been out of bed for nearly an hour and wanted a cup of tea before heading out for the day. She filled a teacup with water and place it in her microwave to heat it. She needed milk so went to the fridge and opened the door, but was annoyed that no milk was in sight. The microwave beeped, but she shrugged it off and hurried out her apartment door and down the hall to her neighbor's. She heard some loud voices and noises of furniture or heavy objects moving and scraping the floor inside. She decided to knock anyway. She waited a few seconds then the door opened suddenly and there in front of her was a very tall, sweaty and fat man who badly needed a shave. He wasn't in a good mood. He asked her very impatiently what she wanted. He seemed to be in a hurry or perhaps was interupted from what he was doing by Jill's knock. Jill asked if Monica was in and that she needed to borrow a cup of milk to make her morning tea. The man turned red at what Jill thought was a simple request. She ain't here, he told her, and this ain't no dairy, either. You want milk? Go to a store and buy it yourself. Jill felt a stiff puff of air as the door was slammed in her face. Turning to go back to her apartment, she saw Monica coming down the hall toward her. Monica walked right passed Jill and opened the door that was just slammed and disappeared into a dark room. Jill hadn't any time to even say Hi, let alone ask what was going on. Just at that second a shot, muffled slightly by the walls cracked the air in the hall. Jill froze where she stood for what seemed a long time. She then worked up the courage to turn and walk back to Monica's door. The door was slightly ajar. Jill slowly pushed on it and squinted her eyes trying to see in the darkened room. She was almost in when lights set the room ablaze with sudden brightness. The room was filled with people Jill knew well, friends and to her amazement, her mother and Monica grinning from ear to ear. The fat man looked at Jill sheepishly and whimpered a weak apology as he too smiled broadly holding a bottle of champagne with a missing cork. A wide white banner on the wall behind him announced that it was Jill's bridal shower!
