July 1, 1970, was the date of the second draft lottery for the Vietnam War.
This story was published in SoftCopy Publishing's My First Time anthology in November 2010. You can check out the anthology on their website (http://myfirsttimebook.com/), or purchase a copy of your very own on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/My-First-Time-ebook/dp/B004CFANCE/) or through the Apple Store! I did, and it's well worth it. Of particular note is the short story "Constellation" by Audrey Fine *Wink*

An excerpt:

The first time I read Wilfred Owen, I breezed through the poem like it was nothing. It was only an English assignment, after all, and with just a month to go before graduation, very little could hold my attention from the hours of eight to three. I didn't think the poem would ever mean anything to me. I didn't think the words would keep bouncing around in my head, settling into that fractured part of my memory where they could constantly taunt me, always in Latin, always the same:

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori. How sweet and right it is to die for country.
