Written for the Dear Me Contest, setting goals for 2007

January 5, 2007

Dear Me:

It's never too late to make goals and a bit different than making resolutions. Goals are something that can honestly be achieved while a resolution tends to be forgotten in the New Year's hustle and bustle. So this year I am focusing on GOALS!

My first goal is to take better care of myself, remember the doctor appointments and not find a reason to postpone them. Another bout with skin cancer deserves my attention, along with general health issues. It's good to give the doctors a bit of practice now and then.

The second goal is to get organized - no more piles of unopened mail or bills on the kitchen table, waiting for a response or the shredder. File the important stuff, like tax papers and old love letters, where they can be found again. Throw away credit card offers and ads. Streamline!

Third goal: Say goodbye to those dust bunnies, even if I have given them names and grown accustomed to them. Give the house, one room at a time, more than a lick and a promise. Open the closet and take out all those clothes that I don't wear, in all the sizes I've kept because maybe I'll get into them someday and give them to the Goodwill folks. How much can one person accumulate over the years that can be turned into cash at a Spring Yard Sale? I will make one corner available to yard sale items, treasures that I have kept way too long - time for someone else to enjoy. My home will get a good cleaning out!

Fourth goal: Get that fourth book of poetry ready to be published! One little book rather than 1000 pieces of paper (on the kitchen table)! Then, if I can't afford it this year, maybe my children will see that it's published and I can join the Dead Poet's Society!

Last but not least, get ready to CELEBRATE my 71st year on Planet Earth, enjoy the year with FAMILY and FRIENDS. I may forget from time to time what I am here after, but know that I should look ahead to the HEREAFTER. Life should be lived to the fullest -

Remember that once a goal is accomplished, there is always time to make a new goal. Follow my heart, remember the music, remember the dance. Do what I can to make my corner of the world a better place.

Always,

Me
