CAN WE PLAY IN THE RAIN ?

BY: Rusty Cason

When the hot summer sun hides its face in the clouds,

I run to my mother, shouting out loud,

"Can we play in the rain?"

With my red curly hair and a half-toothless grin,

I ask once again as the downpour begins,

"Can we play in the rain?"

I scurry outside like a little red mouse,

While the rain taps a tune on the roof of our house.

Mom sits on the porch while we play in the yard;

sometimes it just sprinkles, today it rained hard.

There's no swimming suits; we get wet in our clothes.

I dance in the rain as it drips off my nose.

We dash through the rain as we wave at our mother,

Holding hands as we hop up and down with each other.

I wipe at my eyes with the rain streaming down,

Then grin ear to ear as I run all around.

Down comes the rain, shaped like round swollen drops.

I hold out my tongue where they hit with a plop.

With our yard like a park, we have plenty to do.

There's a sandbox, a swing and a sliding board, too.

We swing on the swings then we zip down the slide.

The rain turns it into a slippery ride.

Again and again I slide down with a thud,

Laughing and giggling as I land in the mud.

We're running and rolling and playing away.

The rain cleans us off as we play through the day.

Playing pretend is the most fun of all.

We act like we're slipping, then we would fall.

We're dolphins in nets that pretend to be stuck.

Then we get in a line and pretend to be ducks.

"Land ho!" shouts my sister, a pirate at sail.

I spit out some rain and pretend I'm a whale.

While my socks are all soggy, my shoes start to squish,

I flop on the ground and pretend I'm a fish.

My sister's a surfer standing up on my back.

I act like a shark that's about to attack.

We're all playing pretend as we run, skip and hop.

We suddenly noticed, the raining had stopped.

The clouds roll away and the sun starts to show.

We look up to the sky and we see a rainbow.

Mom called us inside where we stood on a rug.

She wiped us all off, then she gave us a hug.

We curled up on the couch as we waited for bed,

But then I heard thunder... Can you guess what I said?

"CAN WE PLAY IN THE RAIN?"
