Short fiction written entirely in dialogue form.
"Emily? Emily, is that you?"

"Excuse me?"

"Emily, it's me."

"I'm sorry; are you talking to me?"

"Emily, don't you know me? God, I can't believe it! I've missed you so much!"

"Look, I don't know who you think I am, but I think you've mistaken me for someone else."

"No. No, wait! Don't go! Look at me! You have to know me. We were in love! We were going to be married, for Christ's sake!"

"Believe me, you're mistaken. I don't know you."

"Wait. Please, wait! Who -- who are you?"

"Look - I have to go. Let me go!"

"Please . . . ah . . . it's just that . . . you look exactly like my fiance, Emily. Exactly. She . . . ah . . . disappeared . . . the night before our wedding. Five years ago."

"Oh. I'm sorry."

"I can't forget her."

"Rebecca."

"What?"

"My name's Rebecca."

"Rebecca. God. If you only knew. Oh, wait. Here's a picture of her."

"Well, I guess she does look a lot like me, doesn't she?"

"I look for her every day."

"Maybe you should stop."

"What?"

"Looking for her. I mean, it's been five years. Maybe you should just go on without her. Let her go."

"I miss her so much."

"It's been a long time. Would you even know her now? Really know her?"

"I . . . uh . . . "

"Or would she be someone completely different now?"

"No. I'd know her."

"You thought I was her."

"Uh . . . "

"No, please don't cry. I'm sorry. Really, I am. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings."

"Sometimes I'm afraid she's dead. But other times, I'm more afraid she's not. Does that sound awful?"

"Not really."

"I wonder why she left. What happened? Where'd she go? Was life so bad with me?"

"Maybe it wasn't you. Maybe she just wanted something else."

"What?"

"I don't know -- just something different."

"Not me?"

"I have to go now."

"Why not me? What's wrong with me?"

"Nothing's wrong with you. Sometimes things just don't work out. Sometimes two people just aren't meant to be together."

"I'm sorry for bothering you."

"Are you going to be ok?"

"Yes, I think so. Thank you, Rebecca."

"Good luck to you, David."

"Wait a minute."

"Wait! Rebecca! How did you know . . . ?"
