flash fiction 300 words, Daddy what's that noise...? |
Questions A knock came from the door, freezing me in position, “Daddy? Daddy, what’s that noise?” The sound of my 4 year old daughter’s voice came from the other side. “Wha..?” Monica began as I clamped my hand over her mouth, “Wmmmph?” “Shhhh,” I whispered, “it’s my daughter, Lorrie.” Monica grasped my arm, removing my hand, “Your daughter?” she whispered, “Whattt? You said you weren't married!” Her voice rising. “No, I’m not married, I told you I was a widower.” I whispered. “I also told you I had a daughter.” Grabbing my hand from her mouth again, she whispered through clenched teeth. “What’s the big deal?” “The big deal is, I’m not ready to explain a woman in my bed just yet!” I answered. “Now shhh for a sec, I’ll take care of her.” Shaking her head in amusement, Monica held her finger to her lips and winked at me. “Yes Lorrie,” I called, “what is it honey?” “Daddy, I’m scared, I heard funny noises.” Came the pitiful sob from beyond the door. “Can I come get in bed with you?” “Just a second baby.” I called, motioning Monica towards the closet, “Hide in there for a minute will you?” I asked. “What? Are you serious?” She asked, a look of shock on her face. “Please? Just for a minute or two?” “But, but,...” She started as I pushed her into the closet, depositing her clothes and purse on top of her. Slipping my shorts on, I quickly opened the door and scooped Lorrie into my arms, “It’s all right sweetie.” I crooned. “It’s all right. I’ll come put you back into bed and check, but it’s all right.” As I started from the room there came a crash from behind the closet door. “Daddy? What’s that noise coming from your closet?” |
