Over the summer, I taught kids how to write poetry. Some of the pieces I wrote that month.
Haikus

The day is perfect
Breeze cools the warm yard outside
A/C comes to life

Hot and humid days
Lead to cool and quiet nights
We all need a break

Through the pristine land
Tourists gawk, "Unspoiled sights!"
Cars speed by on tar

Wall of fire wood,
logs meticulously stacked.
Soon it will be burned.

Couldless blue fall sky
The air is perfectly clean
Jets fly overhead

A map of the world
Each land a different color
USA soaked red.

Trees stretch t'ward the sky
Close to heaven as we get
Cut them down for wood.

In a Chinese field
Hot humidity rolls in
Heat is oppressive

Cinquains

Ivy
Climbs the brick. It
covers the walls, saying,
"Ivy is the mark of the best
learning."

Millions
of miniscule
creatures crawl around the
yard while children gawk awestruck at
some bugs

Gutter
filled with lost shoes.
Shoes lost by absent minds.
How could a guy leave without his
right shoe?

Rhinos
painted blue. Zebras
talking with green hippos.
Children learn from the drawings in
kids' books.

Monkeys
swing through the trees,
bananas clenched in their
hands and feet. I wish I was a
monkey.

Cinquains
are easy to write.
Just put down a few words,
Make sure you have the syllables
all right.

Baseball
fills summer nights.
May until September.
The Sox are on top, but then
they slide...
