Taboo

Silence. The room is dark.
Then,
footsteps. A girl enters,
maybe fourteen.

She’s delicate and
as pretty as a picture.
Nervous, she steps softly
over to the illuminated window

where the moon and stars
shine,
reflected in her eyes.
All is quiet.

A tear slips down her cheek,
a knife flashes.
Dark crimson liquid,
invisible to the world.

Morning comes.
Mother cries and mourns,
Father questions,
siblings are confused.

Funeral day,
Everyone uncomfortable.
Another young life
ended.

Life goes on
until the cycle
repeats.
Eternal silence echoes.
