A delayed reaction
It could barely have been called a glance. As her car passed the field the images registered on the retina but not in the mind: the farmer with his galabeyah hiked up to his hips, the low-lying corn stalks, the bit of water in the irrigation channel. Two kilometers later she realized that his gait had suggested a sense of urgency.
