About This Newsletter

*Delight*Hi readers! Here I am as a guest editor of this newsletter. The only recommendation for me being here is that I was once told I had a sense of humour. At the time it shocked me as I was a pretty serious person. I don't write comedy but certainly find humour in the moment! And love to laugh at works of people who have that gift. So In this newsletter I will talk about something I know a bit about. Reviewing!

Letter from the editor

*Fairy2**Wand*Let's review! Sometimes I think I review best those genres/themes I write about or read as I may feel more experienced in those areas..to give a balanced commentary including helpful tips!
Do you feel that way?

*Shock* Yet, the more I have read from other genres, and reviews of pieces, the more I picked up tips on what to look for in those unfamiliar genres and also learned that authors like to hear our responses on many levels. So let's review comedy!

Comedy can, of course, occur in many genres so you can always add relevant comments on that as well.

*Quill**Bookopen* A well rounded review has comments about:
~what you liked, and why,
(could include characters, plot lines, language structures, etc)
~what touched you or made you laugh, if it was relevant and added to the story line/poem etc.
~or what felt off whether in plot, form, language styles, coherence, logic in the piece.
~How you may have related to the theme.
Then end with a positive encouragement or comment. *Thumbsup*

A few more specific things to consider if there is humour/comedy in a story:

*Quill* Did Humour support the story and occur naturally
or did it disengage you from the story?
eg. Like the author being funny for the sake of being funny, or a comical incident that did not really serve the story at that point.
Placing funny parts at the right place really enhances the read. *Wink*

*Quill*Was it relevant?

*Quill*Were too many cliche themes or lines used that took away from an author's original voice?

*Quill*Were there too many exclamation marks? This can be off putting and they do not really add to the humour.

*Quill* What touched you or made you laugh?

*Quill*You might comment on how the author used comedy...character traits, situations, to lighten up the intensity of the plot. Shakespeare did it. *Wink*

*Quill* In poetry, consider word choice, pace, was the punch line surprising or expected,

*Delight*Remembering that we all have points of view about everything, including what is funny, it may be tricky to review.

Still, if it is titled comedy, nonsense, then it is good for the author to know what was hilarious, gave us a belly laugh, a smirk, a groan, a burst out laughing, a smile, within the composition of the work. I have even used those emoticons for emphasis! Or what seemed not so funny, to us! Even a comedian tries jokes on audiences to hone responses.

That's it from the cheap seats! *Wink*

*QuestionY* Hey comedy writers, what helpful comments do you have about reviewing comical works?
