Letter from the editor

Lately I've been pondering a lot about relationships and love. We share this planet with animals who mate for life, and those who just come together for a little while and then part ways again. Humans do not seem to have such consistent ways when it comes to relationships. It is no wonder many of us end up confused, maybe even disillusioned. We all have different hopes and expectations.

I am a relationship person. I easily get attached to people and am one of those dreamers who tends to hope for a happily-ever-after. Not just from my own experience but also by observing others, I can't help but notice that commitment seems to more and more become a thing of the past. Many people just don't bother any more- as soon as things get difficult they move on. They don't want to have to work out any problems that inevitably arise, they don't want to communicate, meet the other person half-way. It's easier to move on to the next partner and experience that thrill of everything being fresh and new all over again.

So many people I talk to have been hurt. So many people I talk to have felt the pain of a partner being unfaithful. Sometimes I wonder why, if we are beings created to love, God could not have given us a clearer indication of who we are supposed to be with, rather than to go through life searching and becoming more and more wary of trying again.

Some would argue that we need to learn certain lessons as we go along. But then, there are plenty of people who pass away without ever having truly known how special that kind of love can be. And then, on the other hand, I know couples who have spent most of their lives together and still glow with a special affection that gives me hope.

Do soul mates truly exist? Is there someone for everyone? I think that perhaps soul mates do exist, but only for a few very lucky people. It would appear that most of us spend our lives looking for that someone we are told is destined to be with us.

And perhaps we set our expectations too high and miss out on some amazing opportunities, searching for someone who will be perfect for us. Because, really, who is perfect? When two individuals try to build a life together, there are always going to be some little irritations and adjustments. There's always work involved, and patience, care and a lot of respect and understanding. When the good vastly outweighs the bad, when the other treats us well, and when we can love someone the way they are... is that not enough?

We are social creatures by nature and I'm pretty convinced that deep inside we yearn for someone who will make our lives complete, who will be with us to the very end. So if God created us to feel that way... why must everything be so complicated?

I would be interested in feedback on this topic.
