When I think of May, I think of showers and flowers. (Isn’t there a rythme? ) When I was living in New England, I definitely noticed how the flowers bloomed after the April showers. I think it’s easy to give flowers in May, since so many different kinds are abundant. I received a nice bouquet of roses for Mother’s day which smell so rich, it just brings the happy. Flowers help to enhance the romance, so I’ll talk a bit about some of my favorite flowers and their memories.
A few newsletters ago, I talked about Scottish Heroes. They embody some of the best alpha males in romance, but heroes come in all shapes and sizes and I thought I’d take a look at beta heroes and their appeal.
EL James has a new book out. It’s called “The Mister,” and James has said it’s meant to be a modern day Cinderella story. Without a doubt, EL James has been successful writing the type of “romance” she does.
Now, it’s been 8 years since the first “50 Shades of Grey” came out. While critics haven’t been a fan of her stories and she’s received mixed reviews, she is an incredibly successful author. What’s her appeal? Is that her writing touches a places in us where we’d all like to secretly go? Is it simply sex sells? Are the characters compelling?
Question for you: Who is going to read EL James’ new book? Why or why not?

Unlike the alpha male, the beta romantic man is open and friendly. He’s an everyday guy who has lots of friends. He enjoys life “today,” and doesn’t really plan much for tomorrow. He’s not an overly jealous guy and can be generous with his time.
Beta males generally lack wealth and social position. They typically have every day jobs, like being a police officer, fire fighter, or an EMT. Betas may be seen as “weaker” than their alpha counterparts, (they just have a different style.). I might say the alpha is dominant, but beta isn’t necessarily a dominant personally because he’s very confident in the guy he is. I wouldn’t call that a weakness.
The biggest conflicts a beta hero might have is “commitment vs freedom,” and “trust and betrayal.” A beta hero enjoys today and the freedom he has today, so commitment is a very scary word for him. A beta easily trusts, but betrayal cuts to core because he doesn’t expect it.
A beta hero would easily give his girlfriend a bunch of flowers. An alpha would do it – reluctantly. (Again, I suppose a matter of style?)
Who is your favorite movie beta hero?
May is a wonderful time for flowers. My favorite flower is the lilac. Believe it or not, the lilac is in the olive family. It grows in rocky terrain. The flowers range from white to purple. The scent is sweet and mild. It tends to grow during the spring, from April to late June and then it won’t come back for another year. It was chosen as the state flower of New Hampshire because it represents the hardy character of the men and women of the state, and I agree with that statement! Growing up in four distinct seasons is not easy. My favorites memories include visiting Granny’s house during this time of year because the lilacs were in bloom. They were so pretty to look at and to smell. For me, lilacs hold treasured memories of a grandmother’s love.
The Keukenhof is a tulip garden near Amsterdam, Netherlands. This year it was open from 17 MAR to 19 MAY, which is about the same time every year. Bulbs are planted in the fall and bloom in the spring. There’s over 10 miles of trails to walk through! This year’s theme was “Flower Power” and since it is the 70th year of the garden, they harkened back to the 1970’s. Over 7 million blubs are planted and 800 different variety of tulips are displayed. Different colors of tulips have different meanings. Red tulips are symbolic of true love. Purple tulips represent royalty. The meaning of yellow tulips have evolved into today’s message of sunshine and cheerfulness. White means, “forgive me.”
Enjoy the rest of your May!

I haven't been inside a library since my boys were in school. They are all in their 30s now. Just easier to load books onto my devices and take them all with me. It is pretty exciting, though, when one of the online libraries picks up one of my stories.
I don't watch Outlander... no real reason why not. Just haven't.
A shameless plug for my poem Dream Wind Whispers . . . the first poem I ever wrote and that before I'd met anyone I wanted to be romantically inclined with! Missed poetry month this year, unfortunately. Next year!
Great articles!
Thanks for writing in! Yes, I agree, devices make it easy to pick up a book. I do think libraries have their appeal. They smell booky. You can browse at your leisure. Libraries get you out of the house.
I thought I’d do something a bit different for poetry month, but next year, I’m definitely going back to poetry month. I missed it this year!

You’re welcome! Glad you enjoy the newsletters.

I visit a library where our writer's group meets. The fact that there are so many books and I only want to read one kind, is daunting. Trying to find a good book is so overwhelming, I don't get any further than the gathering room.
I hear ya! I haven’t visited in a while, but there are usually certain sections I go too. New releases, history, young adult are some of my favorites.
SantaBee is a 911 dispatcher for LAPD. You can find her Christmas romance, “Mr. Christmas Elf” on Amazon. Jules’ Christmas season is off to a lousy start, but along comes an elf named Elvis. Can Jules find her Christmas spirit?
