Character Flaw

How many times have you received this kind of critique or read it about a fictional character?

"Has no depth."
"Is too simple."
"She's a Mary-Sue, he's a Gary-Stu."
"I don't like the main character, he's too slick, perfect, flawless." flawless

A lot of action heroes often get trapped in cookie cutter flaws. Yes, they are flaws, but since they come up so often, they don't add much depth to a character. It's easy being a jackass. "Doesn't play well with others." "Has a bad temper." These two flaws are overused especially in male characters.

As a writer, challenge yourself to step away from the same-old, same-old flaws when inventing a character. You can add depth, humanity, and complexity to your characters by giving them some flaws that are something to overcome, live with, or to challenge.

A firefighter who's afraid of heights.
A romantic heroine who is over six feet tall.
A K9 who refuses to swim.

I received the following replies to my last Drama newsletter "Rivalries and EnviesOpen in new Window.

Quick-Quill Author Icon wrote: This is so true among Millennials. Sad, but who's fault is it? We have a generation or two now of sadly entitled young adults. Maybe we need to remember the old way of schooling.

Thank you for your reply. I'm guessing a concentrated effort by all to practice gratitude would help a little.
