Letter from the editor

My last issue saw widespread snow across the country. Hoping not to jinx things, I believe Spring is imminent. While I'm with many who believe that a nice Spring day just begs us to be outside, it's also true that many Spring days bring rain. Why not spend your next rainy day searching out some worthy nuggets of information readily available in the Navigation Menu? Obviously, this menu contains more information than can easily be reviewed in one day.

Writing.Com Tools: You'll find this section near the bottom of the Navigation Menu. I believe the first three links under Tools contain more information about how to use site features than any other links. Of course, this is my opinion ... and you may want to keep the Tech forums in your Favorites for easy access when you can't find a specific answer.

*BulletG* "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.: This is one of several ways to access WDC's official Reference Guide. Another place to find this guide is in your Skin at the top of any page you're on.

Writing.Com 101 is your definitive How To source for any topic related to the features and workings of the WDC site. Strictly speaking, Writing.Com 101 is just a series of links that takes the user to the appropriate section of information that he or she seeks. These links are set up as a Table of Contents, and lumped into sections for easy perusal.

For example, The section ITEM TYPES contains step-by-step instructions for creating Static Items, Books, Folders, Images, and 18 other Items.

The USING YOUR WRITING.COM PORTFOLIO section is all about using your personal Portfolio, including information on using the Tabs, Tools and Settings. Take a few moments to check out your Community tab. This area contains a cornucopia of personal information about your Community Recognition, Member Activities, Merit Badges and Trophies (Awardicons) received, and even your Wish List--a spot to list items from the WDC Store that you desire. (Other members may view this list, perhaps inspiring them to gift you something off your list. More likely though, it's a just a future shopping list.)

There are 15 more section links to check out covering just about any aspect of the site about which you may need to know. On the off chance you don't find what you seek, post a message in one of the Tech forums--"Non-Technical Support ForumOpen in new Window. or "Technical Support ForumOpen in new Window..

*BulletR* WritingML: Docs & Help: Writing.Com has its own mark-up language called WritingML that allows you to enhance your writing on our web-based system. Everything you need to embellish and enhance your writing can be found in this section.

The Docs & Help popup window contains instructions for the Basic Writing Tools, such as formatting and aligning text, creating popnotes and footnotes, and many other things. It also has instructions for creating links to members, items, forum posts and even shop products to name a few. Would you like to embed something into your writing? The instructions for doing that is here.

The next time you have 15 minutes free, check out WritingML can enhance your writing on site. Be forewarned--that 15 minutes might easily turn into an hour. *Wink*

*BulletB* WritingML: Emoticons: Many folks use emojis and emoticons throughout their social media platforms. Why not here? This section contains more than 1300 emoticons and each icons related WritingML name in order to link it in your writing. The emoticons are grouped in sub-sections such as Animals, Countries, Faces, Holiday, Writing, and 24 more sections.

When I joined Writing.Com ten years ago, many of these support features did not exist. "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. was created in May 2010 in an attempt to collate the myriad of documents from various members explaining how to do this or that aspect of Writing.Com. This was a collaborative effort by a number of members from across the site spectrum along with the The StoryMaster Author Icon and The StoryMistress Author Icon. Writing.Com 101 is a fluid document, continually updated by select members to keep Writing.Com the most comprehensive and best writing site on the net.

Whether you're new to WDC, or have been here for years, sooner or later you're bound to need help with some aspect of the site. Knowing where to go makes all the difference. The Navigation menu, specifically Writing.Com Tools is that place to go first. More to come....

** While writing this issue, I became curious about how many Newbies (and older members as well) use our Reference Guide. I'd like you to take a short survey I've created to that end. To encourage your participation, I'm awarding three Merit Badges on the date of my next Noticing Newbies issue in four weeks--two to Newbies with an inception day of six months or less, and one to any other older member. Winners will be chosen by Virtual Dice from all received submissions. **
