Letter from the editor

Do you ever wonder why you dream the dreams that you do? There’s many a time that I can’t make sense of mine. I have no idea what my brain is attempting to process, because it comes up with the most bizarre scenarios that have absolutely nothing to do with my daily life.

In its defence, it puts on some huge productions. My dreams can be better than the best 3D movies. They’re a fully immersive experience, which is great when it’s a nice dream, but less so when it’s an unpleasant one. Fortunately, I haven’t had a full-on nightmare in a long time. I do have some sad dreams, though, and they can be intense enough for me to wake up upset.

I think that the nightmares ended when I realised that, quite often, I can alter things. I don’t have to be a passive participant. Most nights now I get lucid dreams, and whilst my brain sets the scene, I can, to a certain extent, avert what I don’t like. For example, there was a scene a while ago where some friends and I had to pass a security check and I knew that I didn’t have ID with me, which would have been awkward. At that point I simply made an ID card appear in my pocket – problem solved.

It always puzzles me when people say that they don’t dream. For better or worse, I like the fact that I do. There’s just the one time that it felt as though I hadn’t had one. I was a child when that happened. I fell asleep and it felt like I woke up a minute later, though an entire night had passed! I didn’t like that. Felt really tired, too.

Other people simply don’t tend to remember their dreams. That’s a bit of a shame, too, in my opinion. Unless they were bad dreams. It’s no good remembering bad dreams.

Have you ever had dreams that pop up again and again? I’ve had a few of those. One of them was a bad one, but that’s the one I could eventually alter, and ever since I did that it’s gone away.

There are just a couple of dreams that have had me truly baffled and somewhat worried. One happened, again, when I was a child. I dreamed that my mom and I were on my way to my primary school. We turned the corner, and I spotted one of my friends walking down the other end of the street towards school. When she crossed the road, she got hit by a car. That wasn’t a nice dream, and I told my mom about it when I woke up. That day, when we walked to school, I spotted my friend walking down the other end of the street. She crossed the road. She got hit by a car. Thankfully, she was okay, but that spooked me for a good while after. It made me feel guilty, too – as though I could have, should have done something to prevent what happened.

The other dream was when I was a teenager. Again, I dreamed something that happened a bit later. Where these dreams came from and why, I guess I will never know.

Mostly, however, my dreams are pretty weird and not that grounded in reality. I’ve been a member of an underground resistance, eventually defending my country by flinging chairs. I have defended the world from aliens quite a few times. And from giant swans, though I ended up befriending their queen. There can be dragons and elves and trolls and entirely new species wandering around. Yes, sometimes I can fly. I think most people can do that in their dreams, which is cool.

The reason why I am talking about this in the Spiritual Newsletter is that I cannot help but wonder if our dreams are connected to the spiritual realm somehow. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking... The reason why I wonder that is because sometimes people and pets I have lost show up in them. It’s probably just my mind processing their loss, but it would be good to think that it’s a way in which they visit me, to let me know that they’re okay.

Anyway, what are your dreams like?
