About This Newsletter

A banner for the Romance/Love newsletter.

I was one busy bee this past March! I helped to train a 911 dispatcher at work, attended scouting events, (and one got rained out!), but now I can breath a bit. *BigSmile*

I'm working on switching to a DASH diet. I find it easy to follow without having to count points, and I'm not feeling as bloated.

April is just around the corner and it's a busy month. 1 April is April Fool's Day and my younger son is already plotting to prank me. Just wait until I forget to put out his Easter basket!

The 8-14th of April is National Library Week. I love libraries! You can always find that you're looking for. There are paperbacks, hardbacks, CD's, magazines, small books, ebooks, audio books, internet and more.

It's also national poetry month. Some of my favorite romantic poets include Shakespeare and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Today, I'm sharing some romantic poetry with you in this newsletter. TIP: Write a romantic from the heart, be you, be honest.

Now, a hero in romance writing must be a compelling force of nature, and there's no more compelling a hero than an alpha male. Let's find out what makes them tick.

Letter from the editor

The definition of an alpha male is: a man tending to assume a domineering role in social/professional situations. In writing romance, one often finds that the hero is an Alpha Male.

So who are alpha males? The movies have given us some memorable ones: Russell Crowe as "Maximus" in Gladiator, Marlon Brando as "Don Corlene" and Patrick Swayze as "Johnny Castle" in Dirty Dancing.

Alpha Males share several traits. They are natural leaders and protectors. A good Alpha will always take care of his woman and they there will only be ONE woman. His's a protector. He's competitive and doesn't like to lose. He succeeds in making money because he's successful. Alpha Males take responsibility for their actions. For me, as a female consumer of romance, this is the one trait I appreciate in my hero. He's also not one to show his emotions. He internalizes a lot of his pain and anguish. He couldn't care less about anyone's approval and he's always calm under pressure.

Alpha Males tend to be military, firefighters, police offices, tycoons, or dukes. They may exasperating at times, especially with the women in their lives, but provide romance readers with an exciting story.

Question for you: Who's your favorite romantic hero?

I hate to say this but while I am not a fan of her politics, as a business woman I admire Oprah. I've followed her from the beginning of her program until she left it. I have like some of her movies and think she's a good actress. Its what you accomplished that I admire. She could be the example for many books. Strong woman with flaws and a strange love life. You can use her for the heroine for many a story. I'm sure if you read Jackie Collins you'll find woman like Oprah as her heroines.

I agree - it's what you accomplish.
