How You Play the Game

Most of us have heard the phrase: "It's not whether you win or lose; it's how you play the game."

I ran into an interesting article recently on Norwich, Vermont, a town which has sent an athlete to almost ever Winter Olympics (which are going on right now) for the past 30 years! It's a small town with a great ethic. A sports writer who wrote a book about the town paraphrased Pierre de Coubertin (founder of the modern Olympics):

The most important thing was not winning but taking part, just as the essential thing in life was not conquering but fighting well.

I think that's a great idea! We tend to get so focused on winning or on our goals that we sometimes can forget about the journey that took us there. I see a lot of writing journals here at WDC, and I think that can be a great thing for writers. It helps you focus on the "now" rather than only focusing on the goal of getting published.

It can be good to stop at take a look at where you are and how far you've come!

When we enter a contest, our goal or hope is to win. We kind of can't help that, as it's the nature of competition, but we can shift our focus with some effort. That's why I think it can be good to participate in contests more than just entering. Read the other entries and review them yourself! Offer to help judge a contest (not one you've entered *Laugh* and see it from a different perspective!

Because life isn't all about winning.

As always, keep on writing!
