Winter is Coming
I'll admit it, I haven't seen Game of Thrones. Shocking, I know! But when I searched for the meaning of the phrase, "Winter is Coming," it fit with what I had in mind. In my part of the world, I can feel it approaching. Not when I step outside, because we're having a brief spat of Summer weather in Pennsylvania, with temps in the upper 80s (F), but when I look at the calendar. It's almost the end of September already!
Soon it will be NaNoWriMo time and then the Winter holiday season! For some of us, it's a time of busy preparedness, celebrations, obligations, stress and fun. For others, it can be a barren, possibly depressing, time of waiting until Spring rolls around again. Whichever it is for you, there are ways to get through it.
Plan ahead. One way to get through something stressful or busy is to prepare. Make goals and plan to set aside time to get things done. If you're doing NaNo, think about when you can find time to write. Mornings? Afternoons? Nights? Whichever it is, think about it now and try to make a schedule.
Get involved. Finding a group or activity to join can do several good things. It can help you organize, as often activities are already planned out by a host so you don't have to do as much thinking ahead (The groups that plan for NaNo are a good example, with daily activities and goals planned out for you!) Also, if you're finding the Winter months long and boring, getting involved can help you get through them!
Host something. Don't see a group or activity you'd like to join? Create your own! Filling up your time with a beneficial activity like hosting a contest or activity on WDC can be a great way to get through the Winter! Give it a try!
Write! It's a great time to work on a long project. Make a plan to write every day, or at least start brainstorming on your next writing project. Although Winter has some big holidays, there is also less time to be outside (in the Northern hemisphere, anyway), which can mean more time inside at your writing desk!
Another way that I personally get through the Winter months when I can't spend time outside is watching nature webcams. There are cameras set up on bird nests and feeders and all kinds of other wildlife. When you can't get to real nature, watching it on a TV screen is the next best thing!
(Seasonal affective disorder is a serious malady, and I don't mean to trivialize it or offer a simple solution. If you suffer from depression, I strongly recommend seeking professional help.)
As always, keep on writing!
