Don't Jump the Gun

jump the gun - phrase meaning "act before the proper time"

I'm going on a mini-vacation in about a week, just two days at the beach. I'm so excited that I've been wanting to start packing things for weeks. *Laugh* I'm making myself wait until a few days before. Some items I can't pack until that morning. I guess I'm just a planner and preparer (not really a word), because I want to get started early!

How does this relate to Contests & Activities? Well, I'm glad you asked!

When you host (or enter) a contest, it takes patience. You may want to start reading, reviewing, and judging entries immediately after they're submitted, but you might want to wait. If you allow editing up until the close of the contest, you have to expect that the participants might do just that! You might not be reading the final, polished version of the entry, and that's not very fair to the participants.

Also, when hosting, don't make your contest public until you're absolutely ready. Make sure you have the time set aside that it takes to host something. You may have a great idea for a contest around the Winter holidays, for example, but maybe you're really busy with family and "real life" stuff. Perhaps it would be best to wait until after? Only you can be the judge on use of your time.

On the other side, though, you should do your best to make sure an entry is read and re-read and edited before you submit it. I know it's exciting to enter a contest, and you definitely want to make sure you enter before the deadline. However, it's a good idea to be patient and take your time with your entry. Print it out and read it. Read it out loud. Have a friend read it. Then submit it. (If editing until the deadline is permitted, do that if you still catch the stray error or ambiguity as well.)

On a related note, contest hosts may want to consider adding a rule stating whether or not editing is allowed. *Wink*

Keep on Writing! And hosting and participating!
