It Begins With Humor

It's a strange paradox that humor and comedy is often at odds with each other. All comedy has humor, but not all humor is comedy. The impetus of comedy is entertainment, using skits and jokes that are intended to make people laugh. Intention.

Humor, on the other hand, is a larger category including everyday interaction among people, events and life. Humor is unintentional and never contrived. It happens when least expected, sneaking up on you. In short, a comedian does comedy using humor, but a humorous person doesn't necessarily do comedy.

Humor takes many forms--puns that make us groan, witty observations that occur in a moment's insight, or a conversation between two children. Even a mistake can inspire humor.

Comedy's humor is never a mistake. Comedy is planned, intentional (there's that word again), and designed to illicit a definite response from its intended audience. Humor can be enjoyed individually or en masse; comedy, however, needs an audience.

So, what's my point? Humor is as simple as being able to see the funny side of life, and in my humble opinion, the very basis for comedy. I believe everyone can find the lighter side of life. Communicating that to others is comedy ... and your task as a comedy writer.

Look around you. And happy writing.
