Necromancy
The next topic in my occult series is necromancy. Considered one of the dark arts, necromancy is defined as communicating with or raising the dead. The art has been studied, recorded and practiced for centuries. While I only know about the topic minimally, and from not the most reliable sources like movies and fiction, the topic was pretty interesting to read about.
People practicing this witchcraft did more than chant and raise the spirits, or procure bodies to practice on, they were serious about preparing themselves for the event with elaborate protocol and preparations. They were not supposed to eat meat or salt or look at women's bodies. But they could eat dogs, dogs were the creatures of Hecate, goddess of the dead and ghosts. They set up laboratories and classrooms under cemeteries and mausoleums.
The necromancer called up the dead for numerous reasons. The most frivolous was that they missed a loved on and others were darker reasons, like procuring arcane knowledge only the spirits had. What came to my mind was what I would do if I were able to speak to the dead. Whom would I choose? What would I ask? Would I want to know my own destiny?
All in all, the topic was interesting and inspiring. I hope it inspires you too. Write on!
This month's question: What ghost would you summon and what questions would you ask them?

Excerpt: A brother and sister sat across from each other on curly carpeting. The space was light by candlelight and the flickering illumination caused shadows to be cast on the walls. They closed their eyes and she put her hands out as if searching for something.

Excerpt: She woke in darkness, eyes burning. There was no hint of a coming dawn. Something had awakened her, and she couldn’t say what, an odd cry, perhaps. The artifact of a dream. Now she had to pee. She tried to suppress it, but it was too necessary. She would have to go out and attend to it.
Excerpt: “Welcome to Eastern State Penitentiary. My name is Warden Theodore. This building is most famous for its paranormal activity; it's one reason for overnight trips into the bowels of this complex are so popular. We have expert guides who have been through these halls many times. They will lead you, but what you see, hear or experience is all on your own. Please do not leave your group or wander anywhere alone.
Excerpt: The infant looked at him with tear filled violet eyes. Lowering his hand Aaron began to gently stroke the baby's black cherry hair in an attempt to lull him back to sleep.
Excerpt: There was something else, although Cassie was reluctant to confide in anyone about it. Shadows… Not just daylight over dark places shadows; but things that seemed to move with purpose, just from the edges of her sight; things that actually seemed to make noise when they moved. Whenever she glanced in their direction, there was nothing amiss, and she had to chide herself for imagining things. With all this time on her hands, she figured that her imagination had plenty of opportunity to ‘fill in the blanks’ in an otherwise very dull existence.
Excerpt: "Good morning", I hear. I looked up, thinking my sleeping family finally broached the morning sunlight, but see no one. Hmmm..... oddly unafraid, I assume some electronic gadget has malfunctioned.
"Good morning". There it was again. This time I rose from the table, curious, and found still-sleeping family. I was perplexed, and curious, but again, unafraid.
Excerpt: You know that feeling that you get when someone walks behind you, you can’t see them, but you sense that they are there. I got that feeling and it came from the older section of the cellar, fifteen feet or so from my desk. I looked over my shoulder and saw nothing, my attentions returned to my desk work. The feeling happened several more times over the next twenty minutes.

This month's question: What ghost would you summon and what questions would you ask them?
Answer below Editors love feedback!
Last month's question: Do you remember the elders of your family using old methods like dowsing?
Have you worked that in your writing?
Quick-Quill responded: I wrote a novel that included a douser. He claimed the kids were alive and in a certain place. He wasn't a true souser and ended up being debunked. the naighbors got a kick out of him. He made my sotry pretty interesting. The events are taken from the police files on this case.
Sorry I missed last months's questions. I am writing a paranormal series. I started this years before Heros was written. Similar abilities but more in depth and less super hero style.
Monty replied: I have seen water dowsing successful at finding water veins at twenty feet. Interesting N/L.
Thorn Martinek sent: I wanted to point out a few things you missed. Namely saying that Dousing IS Divination. Though not completely incorrect, it's not quite right ether.
Dousing is a KIND of divination, one specifically used to locate things. Be it with a split stick, pair of "L" shaped rods, a pendulum, or even a deck of playing cards.
Divination is a more general term, referring to predictions of any kind. This encompasses Dousing as well as future prediction, past reflection, present events in other locations, even personalities of others.
Its quite an expansive field of (for lack of a better term) magic.
Sorry if I went on a bit much about this, ^_^
Thorn
Thanks so much for sending more info, Thorn, I'm happy to learn more about any topic.
