Letter from the editor

Creating a character with personality isn't as tough as creating a monster, using your own imagination, and giving it life. People may be complex creatures but that doesn't meant that we can't delve into their psyche and make an interesting character. What about anything else?

If you do just a bit of research you'll notice there are all sorts of mythical creatures out there. Characters not resembling a human at all, as well as those who are part human, part animal. Depending on the story you're writing, your monster can seem less animal and more human if you give them an actual voice. However, that won't satisfy the reader. What you see in your mind's eye is what you have to describe in order for your reader to see the same. Oddities, skin or fur, the color of it, the size of the creature, and any other detail which is different from what we know, has to be presented in order to be seen as if looking through your eyes.

Many of us like to stick to vampires, werewolves, zombies, elves, because those are the creatures we're already familiar with. It's not wrong. Whatever you feel the need to write about, definitely go for it. As a fantasy writer though, your imaginary world is so much bigger than that. Aside from the fact that most times you'll create an entirely new population on a different planet, your characters are far from human. Without mentioning some of the more famous books and movies which contain countless creatures as their main characters, you know that in order to get to that stage, you must work with details. You cannot escape that. While creating something only you imagined, you're still giving it a personality, a monster your reader can care for.

What is your favorite monster then and why?

'Til next time!
