Take a Break

I'm self-employed, and that pretty much means I work a lot. I start around 7 am and I often work until 8 pm or later. I'm newly self-employed (for about two years now), so there's an amount of fear involved until I learn to pace myself. I used to wonder why my mentor took 1-hour plus lunch breaks, but I'm starting to learn. Sometimes you just need a break! In order to be productive, you can't run yourself into the ground.

The same can be said of writing, I think. If you spend all your waking spare moments writing, how much good can you really be doing? I bet even the most successful writers take breaks!

Take NaNoWriMo, for example, since it's coming soon. You spend a month furiously writing almost non-stop, but then you do stop. Once you hit that magic number (or November 30th) you stop. That's when it's time to slow down and take a look at what you've written, proofread, edit, etc.

I think it's important to mix things up. Doing one thing 100% for too long can be detrimental. Have you been working non-stop on that novel for months or even years? Maybe a break might help! Take a break and write something totally different! If you've been focusing on non-fiction, try fiction for a change, or alternate to a different genre or type of writing, like poetry or an essay.

There are so many ways to be creative on Writing.Com, and I really believe they're not just time-wasting activities. They're useful devices to spark creativity! Try taking a look at an Interactive Story, an In & Out or a Contest for a fun break from all your hard work!

And then get back to your work with a fresh start!

Check out some of my Editor picks below for a break from your work and some inspiration!
