Sixteen Long Years
I joined Stories.com back in September of 2002. The horror of it. Where has the time gone? In a blink, we are where we are, and it seems like yesterday. Life is funny that way. It keeps moving whether you notice it or not.
When I joined, I wanted to write, heard the 'calling', and my loving wife encouraged me by letting me quit work for one solid year just to see what would transpire.
In that year I wrote voraciously, had minor success, and then sold a story to Alien Skin Magazine. They paid me 5 cents a word, and I still have that check, mounted and un-cashed, hanging on my wall.
When I first joined Stories.com, I entered every contest available (that's important newbies). People were amazed by the amount of material I was churning out. "How do you do that?" they asked. Well, now you know, I wasn't working a 9 to 5, that's how. I would write for hours, about anything, honing my craft, getting better. The thing about Stories.com was that if you wanted a bigger portfolio, you had to pay for it. Well, I definitely needed a bigger Port, and by cashing in all my winnings from the contests I had entered, I was able to upgrade. I have been here for 14 years. Fourteen! And in all that time, I have never bought gift points to pay for my subscription. I've paid for it 'the old-fashioned-way', I've earned it.
I continue to write. I continue to be a member. There's really no other place with so many features. But what's important now, is quality, not quantity of my writing. Yeah sure, you'll still see my name every now and then in some obscure contest or another. I still like to get in there and mix it up, send shivers down the spines of my competitors.
In my time here, I have started multiple contests of my own, "The Dialogue 500" , for example. It's just my way of giving back to the many authors here that have supported me over the years.
It's Writing.com now, but it's still Stories.com to me.
I love you guys, and I love Writing.com.
HAPPY 16TH!!!!

DEAD LETTERS
Grin 'n Bear It!
Great NL. I loved the collection of quotes you compiled. Really encouraged me to make it a priority to write on a regular basis in hopes of tapping that vast reservoir of fears we all have inside us, but are contained in our unconscious- for our own well-being.
Yes, some of us DO contain them

Hi Bill!
I love your newsletters. They're always full of interesting info and good advice. I really enjoyed reading all the quotes from authors about writing, too. I especially identified with Lee Child's viewpoint. Thanks!
~ Laura
Thanks, hon. It's always a pleasure hearing from such a good author and former Horror Newsletter editor.

Hello Bill!
This is the first time I have waded into your NL, and what a fright night it is! I enjoyed going through the various quotes and sayings, telling myself - one at a time - "This one fits me. That one doesn't. This one does. That one..."
Its all good, Bill. Until I returned to that scary lookin' chick you posted at the top of this NL that is. I wonder why you've gotten the cojones to stick her at the very tippy top of a Horror Newsletter to begin with!! Perhaps to start a Quip Contest? Give her a caption??
"Honey, did you see what I did with my lipstick?"
Yeah. Good one.
Thanks for the NL - and for the reading listed w/authors below. I do believe I'll review a couple of them, which is something I am beginning to do with as many NLs as I can find.
I wonder if its true? That ol' saying that Editors DO appreciate it when someone comes bumble-grumble through their handpicked selections ....and gives stand out reviews?!?
Yeah.
Maybe I should take up writing Horror genre items myself.
Save us all the suspense.
Yeah, doc, the photo does need a caption. How 'bout, "I think there's something stuck in my throat."

A way late response, I know, but I had to write to say that I actually felt sorry for the creature in the image. Normally that sort of thing would just make me curl up (or run away), but the expression seems so 'Why did this happen? Help me' that I rather feel sorry for it.
That's cool, that's cool. I'll tell my wife that not everybody thinks she looks scary first thing in the morning.
