Summertime Celebrations with Poetry

I don’t know about you, but June brings birthdays, graduation and Father’s Day parties for my family. So this month I’d like to share some poetry forms that bring to mind some of the June celebrations.

Just a reminder, any poem create for a specific event—regardless of whether or not you utilize an additional poetry form for formatting, it can be called an occasion poem.

Epithalamion/Epithalamium/Prothalamion/Prothalamium

Many weddings are planned for summer, specifically in June. This first occasion form focuses on weddings and marriage.

Epithalamion/Epithalamium: Primarily for weddings with a focus on the bride and groom.
Prothalamion: More for marriage—but still can be for a wedding, since that is the beginning of a marriage.

BRIEF HISTORY

Epithalamion/Epithalamium: Historically a poem that was sung.
Prothalamion/Prothalamium: Also sung, historically.

MUST HAVES

- Topic/theme: Weddings, marriage, brides, and grooms.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Any number of stanzas, or length--unless following a form, then follow the format required for the form.
--Any rhyme--unless following a form, then follow the rhyme required for the form.
--Any meter--unless following a form, then follow the meter required for the form.

Joseph’s Star

This second form was created in memory of a father, so I share this as a form for Father’s Day.

BRIEF HISTORY

Christina R Jussaume created this poetry form in August of 2007. As I mentioned above, this was in memory of her dad.

MUST HAVES

--No rhyme.
--8 lines.
--Syllabic. The lines must have the following syllables: 1, 3, 5, 7, 7, 5, 3, and 1.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Nothing I read about this form indicates a limit in stanzas, so consider this poet’s choice—however, since star is singular in the form’s name we could assume it’s only one, but I still say your choice.
- Any Topic/theme.

Music Poem

This final form just reminds me of any summertime celebration. Almost always, a celebration includes music, unless you’re in a Footloose movie. Did I just date myself?

A music poem is simply a poem that touches on some aspect of music. You might choose a topic/theme of music, or a musical artist or the life of musicians in general. You might imitate a musical form or piece of music or even a musical instrument. Anything you can think of, it’s all on you and the depths of your imagination!

MUST HAVES

--Something to do with music.

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

- Any Topic/theme.
--Any number of stanzas, or length.
--Any rhyme.
--Any meter.
