Doubt is the space between belief and disbelief. Doubt can play havoc with our emotions, so just imagine what damage it can do to a romance.

Letter from the editor

A romance is a journey 2 people take with up and downs, obstacles, and conflicts. At the end of the journey they know they’re going to be together. BUT: Throw a little doubt in the pot, stir, and then sit back to watch the journey.

Doubt encourages hesitation. It equals conflict. A little conflict is good. It tests “the mettle” of the couple. Can they overcome the odds whatever doubts they possess?

Doubt stinks. It’s raw. It’s ugly. Who likes ugly in a romance? It’s that uncertainty between belief and disbelief. It spices up conflict, kinda like how salt gives life to a piece of chicken. Why is another girl always texting your boyfriend? Are they just friends as he says? Why does he always go a business trip with his personal assistant?

Doubt causes problems in romance. In fact, it causes the best problem – an internal one. Internal conflicts are harder to overcome. One must find proof – satisfaction or heartbreak.

Make no mistake – doubt is not healthy. Too much salt is not good for you. If left to fester, doubt will eat away at what one believes. Isn’t there always a little germ of truth when it comes to doubt? It’s why we doubt in the first place. Oh yes, that pesky little niggle requires investigation (the journey or part of it) and sometimes the truth will break one’s heart. Explore doubt through an internal filter when writing romance. Let it fuel the conflict and you’ll have a story that will resonate with readers. After all, we’ve all had our doubts.

QUESTION: Has “doubting” ever driven you to investigate if your concerns are justified, or did you let it go, not wanting to know the truth?

CHALLENGE: Write an acrostic poem using “DOUBT.” I’ll share your efforts in my next Romance/Love newsletter.

FEEDBACK FROM MY 3 FEB 2016 ROMANCE/LOVE NL: DANGER

Victoria Holt was one of my favorite romance/suspense authors. She was my first introduction to this genre. Have you read anything by her?

Yes, she was one of my first authors to the romance/suspense genre! I absolutely love her writing. Her gothic approach really appealed to me as a young adult. Makes me want to re-read her stories I grew up on. I loved her writing as “Jean Plaidy,” and did a fantastic job detailing the lives of the kings and queens of Europe.

Wonderful, informative NL! I rarely read anything in the romance genre, but I've written a few short stories. Your NL helped me put together some thoughts, should I ever find the urge to write again. Thank you!

Slightly off-topic. After reading about the Windsor Diaries series, I purchased "A Polish Heart". It's next on my reading list!

Glad to hear the NL helped you put some thoughts together. If you do put them together and write something, send me a link.

I hope you enjoyed the Windsor Diaries. I enjoyed writing them. Let me know how like “A Polish Heart.” It’s a good read for this time of year, with Easter just around the corner. *Smile* Steph
