Healthy Competition

There was a saying I'd hear about running and competing in races: Your only real competition is yourself. It's one of the things I like about running - it's a very solitary sport. Sure, there are professional runners who compete against others for prizes, but often it's about beating your own record, achieving that "PR" (Personal Record) that was really important.

Of course, if you're a runner, you've probably noticed that you run faster during competitions. I personally know that I tend to up my pace when others are nearby even when I'm training.

The same can be said about writing, don't you think?

You can spend regular amounts of time writing, whether it's daily, weekly, whatever, and you will most likely improve your craft. Practice brings improvement in almost any craft or skill. When you enter a contest, though, isn't it possible that you find you push yourself just a little bit harder? You up your game because you know you're being compared to other writers.

I think some friendly competition can be healthy and a great part of improving your skills as a writer. One of the ways you can use that to your advantage is by reading (and reviewing) other entries in a contest you're participating in (or thinking about participating in). Check out the competition for some motivation to work that much harder!

When I ran my first 10k race, there was a girl in front of me nearly the whole time. I'd advance, and she would run that much harder to stay ahead of me. When we finished, I thanked her. I told her she was my motivation to keep going. She responded, "I wasn't going to let you get ahead of me!" I like to think I motivated her, too! In that case, I wasn't anywhere near "winning" the race, but I was proud of how I pushed myself, you know? Healthy competition can do that to you.

So get out there and compete! And keep it friendly. *Smile*
