So, there's a new movie out by the time this newsletter reaches you. Have you seen it? Do you intend to?
I'm surprised by the amount of comments it takes on my Facebook page, either by people who will see or have seen it, and several others who have never seen any of them and never intend to. [And why the heck am I friends with such a person?]
Star Wars is a franchise. Even people who haven't seen it know about it. Some might not be able to tell the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek, and the rest of us will shake our heads because they'll never understand either one despite how much they've seeped into our pop culture.
Because of the strong following, Star Wars merchandise is everywhere. Wookie backpacks. Re-D2 socks. Light-up lightsaber key chains. Miniature remote control BB-8!
I think we've been so excited for this release because of the little bit we do know- actors returning to beloved roles. Yet despite disappointment and/or bad reviews for the prequel trilogy, we're back and waiting to love Star Wars even more for this cryontinuation.
What does it mean to us as writers? Pick this apart, just like everything else we read, see, hear. Find what resonates with the audience, and remember what you're trying to say to your audience. You have to tell the amazing story before the audience can find it, adore it, and demand the tee shirts to prove they're fans. |

I like this NL. I hadn't thought of PUSHING a character to their breaking point so they are forced yo change their mind. As I thought about this the must successful books and movies are exactly about this. Grand Torino cones to my mind. While Walt stays the same grouchy person his perception about Humongs as people is changed. His breaking point is when the boy and girl are attacked.
While I'm not familiar with Grand Torino, I do love characters when they're tortured. And you're right- examples of this are everywhere!
