Role-Playing

I've recently gotten into RPGs or Role-Playing-Games. RPGs can be great resources for writers, because, as a player, you assume the role of your character to play a game. The neat thing about the game is that you often don't know what's going to happen, so you come up with the actions and reactions of your character on the fly.

It can be a really great creative exercise! You choose basics of your character and then you're thrown into the unknown with the rest of your party.

What would you (i.e., your character) do if you found yourself with a group on an adventure? Confronted with enemies, battles or obstacles? NaNoWriMo prep groups are great at these types of things, giving exercises to develop character traits. I've found that playing a role-playing game ups the ante by getting you to make quick decisions for your character.

I'm currently in the middle of a campaign with a few friends in a game of Dungeons & Dragons. My character is a rogue wood-elf who is good at stealth and deception, but who is overall "good." In our most recent get-together, however, I was given the opportunity to deceive my group, to keep a secret. I surprised myself by taking the opportunity. Now I'll have to eventually deal with the consequences of keeping something from my group, but it felt right for my character.

If you're ever given the chance to try an RPG, whether it's a video game, a live-action event (LARP) or a table-top game like D&D, I'd say definitely give it a try! I was surprised by how much fun I've been having playing and by how creative you can be. A good DM/GM (Dungeon Master/Game Master) will keep you on your toes!

Ask & Answer

My last newsletter, ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (November 25, 2015)Open in new Window.), discussed dealing with a Feast or Famine situation.

I like your ideas about calendars, and not being afraid to ask for help. I am a stay at home grandma who does the housekeeping and helping my daughter and son in law with my 4 yr old grandson. Time isn't always there! But I am lucky and can spend a lot of time on writing and whatnot. Setting up a WdC calendar as we speak *Smile*
